Whereas the original Outrun allowed players to essentially choose their own path to one of four different ending points, Turbo Outrun is purely linear. However, the addition of a turbo button as well as a rival driver and police cars makes Turbo Outrun just as interesting. This guide presents the basics of the game, and a quick overview of each stage. Note that there are sixteen stages total in Turbo Outrun, set in groups of four stages. ============================================== ============================================== ============================================== THE BASICS First, the player should enter the Options screen and adjust settings as desired. Most important here is setting the controls to one's liking. When ready, it is time to enter the game itself. Transmission At the start of the game, the player must choose between manual transmission and automatic transmission. The Rival Turbo Outrun adds a rival driver. He is important for two reasons. First, he will always try to get in the player's way. Second, the player beings with the girl (Norma) as a passenger; if the rival beats the player to the end of every four stages, then Norma will go to the rival's car. The Police Cars Periodically, police cars will make their presence known; the siren will be heard first (usually), then they will appear. The sole purpose of the police cars is to hinder the player's progress, and they can be quite effective at this (by using blocking tactics). As the game progresses, the police cars appear with more and more frequency, and become a true annoyance. There is really only one way to get rid of the police cars: use the turbo button. Turbo Button By default, the C button activates the turbo. This will provide a quick blast of extra boost, but each use of the turbo will also raise the engine temperature, as noted in the bar graph at the top-right of the screen. So long as the temperature bar is not in the Overheat section, the turbo is available (and 'Turbo Available' also flashes at the top-left of the screen). A quick way to get started at the beginning of Stages 1, 5, 9, and 13 is to use the turbo button as soon as the signal light turns green. The beginning of these stages tend to be rather straight for the distance in which the turbo will be in use, and this will also provide some good distance between the player and the rival. Obstacles Keeping true to the original Outrun, there are numerous signs, trees, and other obstacles along both sides of the roadway; the many cars and trucks also provide some challenges, especially in twisty sections of the roadway. Barrels, speed bumps, and tumbleweeds are scattered across the roadway in some stages; they will only slightly slow the player's vehicle, but this could be just enough to allow the rival to safely pass. Weather Turbo Outrun introduces weather into the Outrun series. Generally, the weather is good, providing the player with clear visibility. Some stages, however, may have snowy or rainy conditions to greatly reduce visibility. Patches of ice may also appear on the roadway, increasing the chance of sliding through a corner. Upgrades At each of the three main checkpoints, the player can select a vehicle upgrade. The options are: Hipower Engine, Higrip Tires, and Special Turbo. ============================================== STAGES AND CHECKPOINTS Start Line Select manual transmission or automatic transmission Stage 1 City: New York City Weather: Sunny Description: This opening stage is lined with trees and signs, and has some barrels in the six-lane roadway. The New York cityscape looms in the background. Corners here are quite gentle, and can typically be taken at full acceleration. Stage 2 City: Washington, D.C. Weather: Rainy, then partly-cloudy Description: Some speed bumps and water puddles line the extreme lanes on either side of the roadway at the beginning of this stage. Trees line either side of the roadway, which has curves gentle enough to be taken at full acceleration. Stage 3 City: Pittsburgh Weather: Snow-covered ground, but clear roadway Description: Signs and trees line the roadway here, and the curves become a little more significant so that light braking is required for some corners. Stage 4 City: Indianapolis Weather: Sunset, clear Description: Trees and signs line the roadway. Hills are introduced into the game during this stage; specifically, the roadway rises and dips rapidly in certain sections, cutting off visibility while mired in the dips and then making it very difficult to clearly see what is ahead when at the top of the crests. Checkpoint 1 Time Bonus: 100,000 points per second remaining Suggested Upgrade: Higrip Tires Stage 5 City: Chicago Weather: Night, clear Description: Signs and lampposts line the roadway while the Chicago skyline looms in the distance. The corners are typically gentle enough to be handled at top speed, and there is a hill to momentarily obstruct visibility. Stage 6 City: St. Louis Weather: Sunny, partly-cloudy, slightly-hazy Description: Barrels initially run down the middle of the six-lane roadway, while trees and signs line its edges. The final portion of the stage is one continuous set of S-curves, requiring a good rhythm to get through this section with only minimal loss of speed in cornering. Stage 7 City: Memphis Weather: Sunny, early evening Description: Trees and signs line the roadway, which itself seems to be one lengthy section of S curves. Mountains fill the background. Stage 8 City: Atlanta Weather: Snow (initially mixed with rain) Description: Trees and signs line the roadway, which has occasional patches of ice or standing water. There are numerous curves here, but at least there are very brief straightaways between them. Checkpoint 2 Time Bonus: 200,000 points per second remaining Suggested Upgrade: Hipower Engine Stage 9 City: Miami Weather: Sunny Description: The roadway is flanked by signs and sand. Some corners will require braking. Stage 10 City: New Orleans Weather: Sunny, early evening Description: Signs and trees line the roadway, which has occasional tumbleweeds. Mountains are low against the horizon. Beware the many dips and crests in the roadway, which tend to occur in the corners. Stage 11 City: San Antonio Weather: Sunny, partly-cloudy Description: The corners are more numerous and more significant in this stage. Barrels provide some obstacles, while signs and trees line the roadway. The dips and crests of the roadway are even worse than in Stage 10. Stage 12 City: Dallas Weather: Clear, late evening Description: Cacti and signs line the roadway, which has areas of tumbleweeds to moderately slow the player's vehicle. The S-curves make a return in Stage 12. Checkpoint 3 Time Bonus: 300,000 points per second remaining Suggested Upgrade: Special Turbo Stage 13 State: Oklahoma Weather: Sunset, with brief rain showers Description: Trees line the tumbleweed-filled six-lane roadway. The corners are not particularly troublesome, but the traffic is typically bothersome in the corners and thus some braking (or at least downshifting) is required to be able to pass traffic on the inside. Stage 14 City: Denver Weather: Snow-covered ground; alternating between clear visibility and falling snow Description: Trees and signs line the roadway. Snow- covered mountains line the horizon. Again, the corners are not bad, but the traffic will force braking or downshifting through the corners. Stage 15 Area: Grand Canyon Weather: Sunny Description: Desert sand expands forever on either side of the roadway, which is filled with tumbleweeds. Signs and cacti line the roadway, with mountains in the distance. The incessant crests and dips tend to come at the corners, providing even more reason for the player to make use of the brakes. Stage 16 City: Los Angeles Weather: Clear, moonlit nighttime Description: Signs line the six-lane roadway as the cityscape fills the horizon. Corners here are rather significant, especially toward the end of the stage/race, so braking will become more and more necessary. Hills also provide somewhat of a challenge, especially in cornering. Finish Line Time Bonus: 400,000 points per second remaining ============================================== ============================================== ============================================== CONTACT INFORMATION For questions, rants, raves, comments of appreciation, etc., or to be added to my e-mail list for updates to this driving guide, please contact me at: FEATHER7@IX.NETCOM.COM; also, if you have enjoyed this guide and feel that it has been helpful to you, I would certainly appreciate a small donation via PayPal (http://www.paypal.com/) using the above e-mail address.
