Introduction > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== Ah, memories... Very few NES owners don't own at least one copy of this game and a Zapper to match. It's a fairly simple shooter, and the only real challenge lies in actually aiming the Zapper from anything beyond point-blank range. Fortunately, I'm here with plenty of tips regarding this. I've been out of the writing scene for a few months due to school and whatnot, so I'm a bit rusty. Forgive me for this. I'm sure you can still figure out whatever it is I'm trying to say. If you think I need to clarify something, feel free to drop me an email saying so. As the summer winds to a close, I've thrown in two quick updates to the FAQ. The big addition is a section devoted entirely to variations. I've listed a few fun things you can do while you play to make the game more exciting. Feel free to contribute anything else you might come up with, since the section could certainly be improved quite a bit. And with that, I'm off. Where can I purchase a Zapper? 3. Will this make my kids want to kill other kids? 4. Is there any way to kill that stupid dog? 5. Why do I keep missing? 6. How can I cheat? 7. Are there any other Zapper games? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q1. Where can I purchase this game? ----------------------------------- Probably anywhere that sells NES games will have this, at least in the form of the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge. If you prefer to shop online, eBay is always a good place to look, and EBgames.com is currently selling it for $1.49. Q2. Where can I purchase a Zapper? ---------------------------------- You can usually find a Zapper in any store that sells NES items. Don't expect to pay more than a few dollars for it. As mentioned in the previous question, eBay probably has what you're looking for, but you might have to buy a lot of other stuff, too. Q3. Will this make my kids want to kill other kids? --------------------------------------------------- Only if your kids have homicidal tendencies to begin with. Even then, I don't think we can consider this game a trigger. Q4. Is there any way to kill that stupid dog? --------------------------------------------- Nope. Not in this version. Deal with it. Q5. Why do I keep missing? -------------------------- You probably need to clean your Zapper, plug it in, adjust the brightness on your television, or just learn how to aim. Q6. How can I cheat? -------------------- Get yourself a Game Genie and Google it. There are some codes out there; I'm just too lazy to find out who discovered them so I can ask for permission to use them. I know they're not in the official Game Genie codebook, but that's the extent of my knowledge on the matter. Q7. Are there any other Zapper games? ------------------------------------- Yes, actually. I can't name any off the top of my head, since this is the only one I've played, but there is a Zapper FAQ by SpoonDog on GameFAQs.com that lists the games and has quite a bit of information on each one. Check it out! =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 3. Game Basics > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== Scoring ------- When you hit the target you are aiming at, a small number will appear where it was flying. This is your score. The number varies with the type of target and the round you are currently on. If you manage to hit every target the game throws at you, you will receive bonus points. .----------.----------.----------.----------.----------. | Round 01 | Round 06 | Round 11 | Round 16 | Round 21 | .--------+----------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | Black | 0500 | 0800 | 1000 | 1000 | 1000 | +--------+----------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | Blue | 1000 | 1500 | 2000 | 2000 | 2000 | +--------+----------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | Red | 1500 | 2400 | 3000 | 3000 | 3000 | +--------+----------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | Clay | 1000 | 1500 | 2000 | 2000 | 2000 | +--------+----------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | Bonus | 10,000 | 10,000 | 15,000 | 20,000 | 30,000 | '--------'----------'----------'----------'----------'----------' Hit or Miss ----------- Each target only stays onscreen for a certain amount of time. If you don't shoot it, you'll receive a miss. You are only given so many misses for each round. If you exceed the limit, it's game over for you. At the bottom of your screen, below the hit indicator, you can see a line of little blue dashes. Your successful hits must reach at least the end of this line when the game groups your hits and misses at the end of each round. The line will begin to get longer after the tenth round. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 4. Holding the Zapper > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== Before we start off on this, you'll need to determine both your dominant hand and eye. Your dominant hand is easy; it's the hand you use to write. If you aren't sure which is your dominant eye, hold up a small, thin object (such as your finger) and look at it with both eyes. Then close one eye and open it again. If the object appears to move as you do this, the eye you closed is dominant. If your finger (or whatever else you might be using) appears to stay in the same place, your dominant eye is open already. In all cases, your dominant hand should grip the gun as you would a pistol. Your index finger should be on the trigger. When aiming, close your weaker eye while leaving the dominant eye open. To aim with a Zapper, you'll have to learn how to use sights. Take a look at your gun. Near the back, there are two triangular ridges. At the front, there's another one. When using sights, you have to line up the bead (the ridge in the front) with the two ridges in the back. You must then focus on your target and adjust the angle of your gun so that the bead is directly below whatever you're trying to shoot. Observe: target->_ T _ rear ridge-> / |o| \ <-rear ridge ^-bead Method #1 - Single Hand ----------------------- This method requires a brace of some sort, as very few people can hold still while aiming. In addition to this, we tend to jerk the gun back a bit as we pull the trigger, so our shot goes higher than intended. This brace can be as simple as your knee or your other arm. It all depends on how you're sitting. Your other hand can be used to do whatever else you happen to be doing at the moment, unless you're using it to support the gun, which sort of defeats the purpose of a single hand grip. Method #2 - Both Hands ---------------------- Unlike the previous method, you'll need two free hands for this one. With the gun securely held in your dominant hand, cup your other hand around it so you have a double grip on the Zapper. This allows for a much steadier grip than one might have with just one hand. No brace is required for this method. If you want to play war with the ducks and pretend your in a trench, you can crouch behind your coffee table. It adds new depth to the game. Method #3 - Rifle Style ----------------------- Again, you'll need both hands. Your dominant hand should be held as usual, but the Zapper should be held relatively close to your face. Your other hand can then be moved up to support the barrel of the gun, as if you were holding a rifle. Like the second method, this provides great stability without requiring a solid surface. Having the gun that close to your face makes aiming incredibly simple, too. Method #4 - Point Blank ----------------------- This is the method favored by lazy bums and frustrated people. Sit about a foot away from the television and hold the gun however you want. Put the tip about an inch away from the screen. Point it at a duck as it flies out and fire. From this close, you should hardly ever miss. Of course, you'll get bored in a few minutes, but it's fun while it lasts. Probably more so if you partake of illegal substances beforehand. Don't stand too close to the TV, or you'll hurt your eyes! Thanks to The Admiral for pointing that out. He's such a clever guy. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 5. Single Duck Hunting > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== This is by far the easiest mode. Like all three of them, you are given three bullets. However, there is only one target for these three, whereas the other two modes both have two targets. Also, your single target only moves around on the screen. It does not fly away from you. If this is your first time playing the game, this is the mode you should play. Your first shot can be taken however you want -- you can try to nail the duck right away, or you can try to do something fancy, like shooting the target while doing a headstand or aiming with your toes. Try to hit the duck with the next shot, and the third and final shot is a nice little buffer in case you miss with the second one. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 6. Double Duck Hunting > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== If the previous mode does not satisfy your bloodlust, you might want to knock it up to the next level. This time you are given the same three bullets, but you need to hit two ducks with them. Again, the ducks' motion is only two-dimensional. This mode moves about twice as fast as the previous one, because instead of going through ten sessions of shooting, you only have five with two ducks in each one. Do not let this scare you; you are still shooting the same number of ducks. Unless you are absolutely confident in your abilities, you shouldn't throw away your first shot. Try to hit the ducks right away, and you'll still have your third shot as a backup. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 7. Clay Pigeon Shooting > =- ( | | - - '-'---´ --------------------------------------- `---'-' - =============================================================================== Animal-lovers might prefer this mode to the previous two. Unlike before, your target is simply a lump of clay, instead of a living, breathing duck. The game spits out two clay pigeons in each set, and there are five sets in a round, for a total of ten pigeons. Instead of moving around on the screen, the clay pigeons go along a straight path that recedes into the back of the screen, with your target constantly shrinking. Because of the difficulty of this game, you should aim for the clay pigeons on the first two shots and save the third one in case you miss on one of the others. The targets shrink as they move away from you, so if you wait for the third shot to hit one, it will be extremely small and difficult to hit. Good luck. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 8. Gang Wars 3. Pin the Tail on the Duck 4. Russian Roulette 5. Secret Agent Man 6. Sniper 7. Trench Warfare ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. The Duck Hunt Drinking Game ------------------------------ Gather all your friends around the TV and take turns shooting. Every time somebody misses, everybody takes a drink of their alcoholic beverage of choice. This has a nice, exponential effect, since the more you drink, the more likely you are to miss. For the record, I don't encourage this unless you've reached the legal drinking age of whatever country you happen to live in. 2. Gang Wars ------------ Get a plastic car, skateboard, or anything else with wheels that you can sit in or on. Then convince a sibling to push you past the television every round so you can pretend you're involved in a drive-by shooting. 3. Pin the Tail on the Duck --------------------------- Close your eyes, spin around ten times, and leave them closed as you try to shoot the duck. If you're drunk and/or dizzy enough, you can probably do this with your eyes open and still hit the same number of ducks. 4. Russian Roulette ------------------- Get six Zappers, knot their cords together, and plug one of them in. Toss the whole bundle onto the ground, pick one up, and try to shoot a duck with it. Mix them up and pick a new Zapper after each duck. If you don't have six Zappers, you can play a game with much better odds with only two or three. 5. Secret Agent Man ------------------- The entire time you play, dodge bullets by jumping around, ducking, weaving, rolling, and hiding behind furniture. Finish off the round by sipping a martini and making a smooth getaway in your fully loaded Cozy Coop. 6. Sniper --------- Stand as far away from the screen as your cord will allow, perched on a piece of furniture. Wear all black, right down to the gloves, and sit quietly until the duck comes out. Mute the television to silence your shot. 7. Trench Warfare ----------------- Crouch behind your coffee table and only come up when you hear the ducks coming out of their hiding place (that being the grass). Wear a bicycle helmet and tape a butterknife bayonet onto the end of your Zapper for added effect. =============================================================================== - .-.---. --------------------------------------- ,---.-. - - | | ) -= < 9.
