Introduction > .:*~*:. =============================================================================== Hello! Welcome to the wonder that is Mystery House. Using this guide, you should be able to get through the game unscathed, as is very important when working towards the final goal. Mystery House was released in 1980, the first graphical adventure ever made. It was the also first game made by Ken and Roberta Williams, founders of Sierra On-line. That was a pretty long time ago, but Mystery House is still at the top of the Apple II requests list on GameFAQs, so I'm writing this because I'm nice. Sometimes. OK. So, if you're looking for a walkthrough that doesn't give the whole story away, check out the regular walkthrough. If you just want to get through the game, I'd recommend the Command Walkthrough. Enough about that. I'm just wasting space. Enjoy the game! - Bananagirl =============================================================================== .:*~*:. < 2. Preliminary FAQ > .:*~*:. =============================================================================== Q. Why are the graphics so shoddy? `````````````````````````````````` When this game was first released, in 1980, graphics in a game were unheard of. Don't knock the graphics. Sometimes it's hard to tell what an item is, but that's what I'm here for. So don't worry about the graphics. Enjoy the game. Q. Who's this Robert Williams person? ````````````````````````````````````` Roberta Williams is the brain behind Mystery House. She created the story, the text, and the graphics. Her husband, Ken, covered the programming aspect. Roberta later went on to create 4 other Apple II games, the King's Quest series, and a few other games you might have heard of. Q. Where can I get this game? ````````````````````````````` You probably can't find an original copy. But it's part of the Roberta Williams anthology, which you can probably buy on eBay or something. The game itself encourages sharing of it, so someone probably has it up for download somewhere. Look around a bit. Q. Is this appropriate for my kids? ``````````````````````````````````` Hm... Maybe. It _is_ a murder mystery, after all. But sometimes it's hard to tell if something is a body or a living being, so it's obviously not graphic in the images of death and destruction. The descriptions are questionable at times, but all in all, it should be fairly safe to let the kids have a go at it. Q. How 'bout for older people? `````````````````````````````` It's a classic. Highly recommended for everyone. Just make sure only one person plays at any given time. There's only one saved game slot here, and few things are more annoying than getting most of the way through a game and having someone else replace your game with their own, which just happens to be near the beginning. Q. Where have I seen these questions before? ```````````````````````````````````````````` Being all lazy and such, I just stole them from my King's Quest guide. New answers, though. I'm not quite _that_ lazy. =============================================================================== .:*~*:. < 3. Game Basics > .:*~*:. =============================================================================== Story ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You and seven other people find yourselves in front of a large abandoned Victorian house. All of you are there for the same reason: the jewels said to be hidden in it. Unfortunately, some of your greedy comrades are ready to take desparate measures. Watch your back! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Characters ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom ``` Occupation: Plumber Hair Color: Blonde Sam ``` Occupation: Mechanic Hair Color: Brunette Sally ````` Occupation: Seamstress Hair Color: Redhead Dr. Green ````````` Occupation: Surgeon Hair Color: Brunette Joe ``` Occupation: Gravedigger Hair Color: Brunette Bill ```` Occupation: Butcher Hair Color: Blonde Daisy ````` Occupation: Cook Hair Color: Blonde ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YOU ARE IN THE FRONT YARD OF A LARGE ABANDONED VICTORIAN HOUSE. SOME STEPS LEAD UP TO A WIDE PORCH. --------------- ENTER COMMAND? That's your basic command screen. Just type. Then press enter. Also, basic words like prepositions and articles and stuff don't matter. So instead of saying "Go up the stairs" you can just say "Go stairs." And to go in any given direction, just type the first letter of the direction. Like N for north and D for down. Type INVENTORY to view your inventory. If this paragraph looks sort of familiar, you probably read my Mission: Asteroid FAQ. I kind of borrowed it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saving/Loading ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saving is as simple as typing "Save game" into your command line. Loading is just as easy. Type "Restore game" and you're set. Just one thing to take note of... You've only got one saved game slot at your disposal. Don't replace it if you're hopelessly lost in the middle of the woods, or you'll never make it out of there alive. =============================================================================== .:*~*:. < 4. Walkthrough > .:*~*:. =============================================================================== You start out in front of the house. Everyone else is already inside, so walk up the steps and open the door. Walk in. Note the gathering in the entry hall. Take the note on the floor and read it ("Valuable Jewels are hidden in this house. Finders-Keepers."). Then drop it again. The game doesn't recognize the difference between the various notes you'll be picking up throughout the game, so if you're carrying more than one, it probably won't read or drop the one you want it to. Now walk south, into the dining room. The more observant among us will notice the candle sitting on the table. Pick it up and add it to your currently empty inventory. No go back north. You should be back into the entry hall. The entry hall is the hub of the game. As such, head for the kitchen to the west. Once in, open the refrigerator, look in, and grab the pitcher. Then look at the sink. Pick up the butterknife sitting within and turn on the water. Get it, then open the cabinet and look inside. There should be a box of matches, but it might be a bit difficult to tell what they are. Just take them and move on. By this time, the rooms should have "It is getting dark" tacked onto their descriptions. Light the candle. If you want to, you can turn off the water and close the cabinet and refrigerator, but it's not really necessary. Go east once more, and save. This should become a habit for you to save every time you enter the hallway, either upstairs or down. That way you won't have to restart if you screw up or get lost in the forest. Walk east again, and take the note. It says, "7-6=1. Then I am done!" Sounds like a warning. But why only 6, I wonder? There are, after all, 8 people in the house, including yourself. I guess you aren't on the hitlist. Anyway, drop the note, open the door, and go east then south. You'll cross through the side yard and into the back, then run into a body. Look at it. Better cross victim #1 off your list of possible killers. Open the door and go back inside. Look around, and you'll start a fire. Oops... You've only got time for one command here, so pour the water on it before you're burned to a crisp. Hey, look. The fire burned a hole into the floor. Look inside and grab the key within, then go north. You'll find yourself back in the living room, so save your game. The time has finally come for you to tackle those stairs, so go up them and head west. Go through the door and examine body #2. Only 5 people left for you to suspect. Go back to the door and walk west again, and take the door you'll find there. Take the note, read the note ("You will never find it! It's all mine!"), and drop the note. Walk back out into the hallway and go east three times. Go through that door and be glad your character has good reflexes, then grab the dagger and go back through the door. Head east again, take the next door, and examine yet another body. This time a clue is found in the form of a blond hair. There are three blondes in the game, none of them dead yet. But at least your choices are narrowed to those three. Leave the room and go west twice. Now would probably be as good a time as any to save your game. Walk north and go up the stairs, and you'll find yourself in the attic. Take the hammer lying on the ground and go through the door. There's a chest in here, but it's locked. Fortunately, you found that key when you burned a hole in the carpet, and it fits right in. Open the chest, look inside, and get the gun. I could be wrong, but personally, I think gun's illustration is the best in the game. Your business in the attic is done, so go back out and down the stairs, then walk north and go through the door there. See that picture on the wall? Pry it off with your butterknife and take it, then press the button underneath. You have no business with the wall at the moment, so go east instead, and look at yet another body. This time a blonde. If you're picking up on the clues here, you should be able to guess the gender of the killer by now. But if you can't, just keep playing. It will all become obvious in the end. Take the towel off the rod, then go back through the door. Walk north twice then south once, go down the stairs, and make the requisite entry hall save. After that little ritual, head west to the kitchen and shove that cabinet out of the way. Note the brick wall. Break it, and crawl into the hole. Head down the stairs and walk south. Examine the body lying here. Another blonde, and he's holding a daisy. You should have a pretty good idea of who the killer is at this point... Grab the key from the table, then go through the hole. You'll find yourself in front of a very tall tree. Climb up and look through the telescope. Odd how you overlook these things sometimes, isn't it? Go down twice, and save your game before heading into the big, scary forest. Head north four times. This place seems the same as the rest of it, but you can open a door and go up here. You'll pop into the kitchen, so head east into the entry hall and save. Back up the stairs with you. You're aiming for the attic now, so once up there, go north then up the next set of stairs. Now that you've seen it with the telescope, the trapdoor is visible, so open it and climb the ladder. You've reached the climax. And the killer is... Well, DUH! Kill Daisy (with the gun). Take the note and read it ("It's in the basement!"), then head down the ladder, out of the attic, and north. Walk into the room and behind the wall, then go down twice. Note the algae. Scrape the algae off and take the loose brick. You've found the jewels! Take them, then go north, up the stairs, and through the hole. Head back into the entry hall by going east (save if you must), then unlock the door with the key you found on the table downstairs. Open said door, and go north and down the steps. Congratulations. A Guru Wizard is you!! =============================================================================== .:*~*:. < 5. FAQ > .:*~*:. =============================================================================== Q. Who's the killer? ```````````````````` Much as I'd love to tell you right here, you'll have to either find the game or scroll through the walkthrough to find out, lest I spoil it for those who have yet to play the game. Q. I got lost in the forest! Now what? `````````````````````````````````````` Restore. Or start over. The forest is a fairly tricky thing to have to deal with, so try to avoid it whenever possible. Q. I forgot to drop a note. How do I read my new one? ````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Try dropping a note. With luck, it will drop the right one and you'll be free to read the one you just picked up. If not, it doesn't really matter. The notes give small clues, but beyond that, they're pretty useless. Q. Where can I find/do _____? ````````````````````````````` I dunno. Check the walkthrough. Q. Hey! It won't let me do _____. What should I be typing instead? `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Try checking the Command Walkthrough. That's why I made it, y'know. Q. I have a question you haven't listed here. How do I ask you? ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Just send me an email at bananasquid@msn.com letting me know your question. I'll try to get back to you with an answer as soon as humanly possible, and since nothing is really frequently asked these days, I'll put it in here. As long as it isn't something that I've already answered. I have a low tolerance for such things. =============================================================================== .:*~*:. < 7.
