However if has its charms and since its reissue on budget in the UK a whole new set of gamers will be needing a clear guide based on the English version. This guide contains full information, strategy and movelists for all characters. A guide to Build Up mode and some background to help out newer Dragon ball fans who have not heard of Dragon Ball: GT, the series from which a lot of the characters are drawn. Hopefully you will find this easy to use and somewhat illuminating. Ready? Fight! *********************************************************************** REVISIONS - (02/03/2003). Full fighting guide and full set of movelists, with strategy provided. Guide to Build-Up mode, background and a FAQ also included. Guide pretty well complete, so next update will likely be the last, and will probably just be corrections if needed. ========================================================================= **************************** 2) GENERAL FAQ **************************** ========================================================================= Dragon Ball: GT has only just started to air in the United Kingdom, and many of the fighters as well as the end boss are based on that series (in the USA the game is actually called Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout). In fact Dragon Ball Z has only just started to acquire a following here! The final section of this guide deals with the entire Dragon Ball saga for those who are very new to it. This FAQ section is aimed at those players who have come to the game with some knowledge of Dragon Ball from the DBZ series, but have no clue what Dragon Ball: GT is, as well as handling questions about gameplay issues etc. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: I have just started playing, and why won't the characters move faster? I can't move forwards or backwards properly! Answer; It may seem dumb, but it took me a while to work out that just pressing forwards or back on the direction pad was not the correct way to move you characters about. You must use R1/L1 and the directional buttons to make a speedy dash either way! _________________________________________________________________________ Question: I have only just started playing? Why is it sometimes when I do a big energy attack like a Kamehameha the screen moves behind me, and the word COUNTER flashes on the screen? And why is it only sometimes? Answer: These are called "DEMO" moves. Basically when performing one of each characters powerful energy attacks, if you quickly tap the button inputs it will come out normally. If at the end of the combo press and hold the final input direction and triangle firmly you should turn it into a demo move. These allow more spectacular counters, avoidance and blocks to be performed by the person it is aimed at. Damage is still the same. This effect can be disabled in the Options menu (see FIGHTING GUIDE for more info on performing, blocking and countering DEMO moves) _________________________________________________________________________ Question: How do I save the characters I have unlocked? Answer: You can't. Basically when you turn off your PlayStation you'll lose all the secret characters. You'll have to enter the code each time you play to have them all available. But if you have saved a secret character in Build Up Mode that will still be retained for you to carry on developing. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Why are some of the blonde characters called "Super" and others "Super Saiyen". I thought that when a character went blonde, they WERE Super Saiyen! Answer: Well yes, it seems that to distinguish between the characters that are Super Saiyen in two forms, one form has been called Super (eg. Super Goku from DBZ and Super Trunks from DBGT) and the other has been called Super Saiyen (eg. Super Saiyen Goku from DBZ and Super Saiyen Trunks from DBZ). But actually all blonde versions of the characters are Super Saiyen. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Why does Super Saiyen Trunks look so different from the other Trunks in the game? Answer: Super Saiyen Trunks is actually FUTURE Trunks from the Android saga in DBZ. He is older than Trunks from DBGT, who is a teenager. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Why is Majin Buu so small? Answer: Because he is in his final form, that of Kid Buu who appears at the very end of the DBZ saga. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Who is Pan? Answer: Pan is Goku's granddaughter and the feisty daughter of Gohan and Videl (Hercule's daughter). She appears at the very end of the DBZ saga and plays an important role in DBGT. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: How come Goku has managed to go Super Saiyen 4? I thought Super Saiyen 3 was the highest they could go? And who is that big ape thing that is the final boss?? Answer: In DBGT Goku is able to access a fourth form of incredible power. It is a combination of the normal process of going Super Saiyen but also recalls the original way the Saiyens could power-up, which was by turning into a huge ape (at the beginning of DBZ, Gohan, Goku and Vegeta have tails and can turn into huge apelike creatures of enormous power). That is why he looks big, furry and has a tail. See the Dragon Ball background info at the end of the FAQ for a more detailed explanation of SS4 and the Final Boss, Super Baby. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: I tried to unlock Super Baby, Gogeta and Gotenks as fighters using a code I found on a reputable codes site, but it didn't work... Answer: You can't fight as Super Baby without using a gameshark. I can't prove or disprove the existence of Gogeta and Gotenks in the game, but as none of the codes work, I don't feel inclined to believe the instructions to fight 20 times in arcade mode (Hard) without continuing, to unlock them! _________________________________________________________________________ Question: So which codes DO work? Answer: In the UK PAL version the only code that works is the following entered at the Title Screen. Forward, back, down, up, forward, back, down, up, triangle x 5, square x 9 After entering the d-pad moves you should here a "boop". This means you have unlocked all secret characters except Super Saiyen 4 Goku. Then enter the triangle and square commands and you'll here another "boop". That means SS4 Goku has been added to the roster. The only "proper" secret characters are Vegetto and SS4 Goku. Vegetto has unique moves, and although SS4 Goku shares the same moves as the other Goku's, he is much, MUCH stronger. He deals more damage with his attacks and is very resistant to damage inflicted upon him. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Why doesn't the manual list ALL the moves for the fighters? And why are some characters called slightly different things from one screen to another? And why are they speaking in Japanese??? Answer: Basically this was converted straight from the Japanese version and released in the UK first time around in 1996. As the US dubbed versions of Dragon Ball hadn't aired here, they kept the Japanese voices. The lacklustre manual and misspellings of names are just typical of the usual rushed conversion job. _________________________________________________________________________ Question: Hey! You reviewed this game as well and gave it 4/10! TRAITORu!!! Answer: Er.. um.. oh look a bee! *runs away* ========================================================================= ************************* 3) FIGHTING GUIDE ***************************** ========================================================================= Dragon Ball: Final Bout has a very straightforward combat system relying more on timing, dodging, countering and energy management than complexity of attacks. Every character has moves that are carried out in similar ways, the key to the game is learning each fighters strengths and weakness, when to fight in close, when to push back and when to take to the air. Start with a character like Trunks or Goku, and once you have grasped the games basics with these good all-round fighters, move onto the more complex likes of Pan and Piccolo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- a) BASIC MOVES ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every character has special moves that are listed in the individual sections below. However there are also several common moves that are listed below: Punch Square Kick Circle Energy Ball/Ki Blast Triangle Block/Guard Cross Restore Energy Hold down square + cross Fast Dash Directional button plus R1/L1 Dodge R1 or L1 + cross Jump Up Crouch Down Crooning Block Hold down + Cross Fly Press Up + L1/R1 Unlike most fighting games, in which you have a set number of rounds to fight through, DB: Final Bout has only one round. Both characters have a doubled health bar, which needs to be depleted twice for a win. Underneath is an "energy" metre in red. This is used to power energy based attacks. The more powerful the attack, the more it will use up. Managing your energy is the key to most successful bouts. If you allow it to be over-depleted your character will have to pause to catch breath leaving you powerless to defend. You can recharge energy by holding Square + Cross; this also leaves you open to attack. The energy metre will recharge very slowly on its own as the fights goes on. Once in the air you have quite a wide area to zoom around in, although there is a max height and width you can fly out to. Practice taking off and landing and moving using the fast dash L1/R1 functions. This is the only way to increase the speed of combat in an otherwise slow game. EXPLANATION OF MOVE INPUT INSTRUCTIONS Here is a lovely rendition of the d-pad positions: O O O \ | / --O means "forward" (f) O-- --O \ O means "down-forwards" (df) / | \ O O O O-- means "back" (b) A capital F or D or U means press and HOLD that button while performing the rest of the button presses. If the f, d, u, b is in small case then that means just tap. A comma separating the commands means the buttons must be pressed in quick succession, but not at the same time. A Plus sign + indicates when two buttons must be pressed together. Unlike a lot of fighting games the button inputs for DB: Final Bout are pretty simple, there are no moves that require any d-pad rolling. Moves need to be made with quick, firm taps of the d-pad and action buttons. The main skill you will need to develop is compensating for the sometimes sluggish responses to your inputs from the fighters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- b) FLYING VS. GROUND ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each character can fly by pressing Up and L1/R1. In the air you can zoom about using the directional buttons and L1/R1. Fighting in the air can be quite fast and frantic, but also very frustrating. Collision detection gets much worse up in the air and it's very hard to target energy blasts efficiency. Often some players will use the air as a safe haven to go and power back up in, especially if they are fighting someone like me who is not a fan of Final Bouts air fighting system. If you are someone who enjoys ground fighting its good to start learning and using characters who have energy attacks that spread out like trunks or Majin Boo, or those ones who have rising attacks like Goku or Vegeta. The main beef I have with the flying in this game is that with no way to "lock on" to an opponent you often spend much of your time flailing about banging into their feet and firing beams that miss by miles. The time you do get a good fight is when you fight toe-to-toe with your opponent, by which time, you may as well be on the ground. Some of the smaller characters like Pan, Little Goku and Buu can be more effective with some flying incorporated in their strategies as they make small and difficult targets to hit and Pan especially can make up for her weaker attacks by combining speed and flight to cause maximum annoyance. Basically, I don't like flying much and it tends to be small part of my strategy; I like a simple, toe-to-toe fight, with no Smash Meteors. With the games sluggish pace and other faults such as poor AI and collision detection, I find keeping the fights on the ground the best way to accentuate what's good about the game ------------------------------------------------------------------------- c) DEMO MOVES ------------------------------------------------------------------------- You'll notice each character's top two moves on their movelists are powerful energy blast attacks, such as Kamehameha's etc. Basically when performing one of each characters powerful energy attacks, if you quickly tap the button inputs it will come out normally. If at the end of the combo you press and hold the final input direction and triangle firmly you should turn it into a demo move. These allow more spectacular counters, avoidance and blocks to be performed by the person it is aimed at. Damage is still the same. This effect can be disabled in the Options menu. When character goes into a demo move the camera will move behind them. If you are defending against this move you know have more counter options open to you, instead of just blocking or jumping you can dodge it and knock back a counter hit. When you see the word COUNTER flash up that is the moment you need to decide of you want to Counter or Defend. If you decide to defend you can then do one of three things. Defending against a Demo Move 1) Press Circle and Square together to be pushed back with out harm 2) Press Cross and Triangle together to Disappear (cool!) 3) Press Cross on its own to Guard the attack. To Counter a Demo Move 1) Press Circle, Triangle and Square all together quickly at the same time 2) If you succeed you'll fire out an energy blast of your own 3) When the two blasts meet, both start pressing Triangle as fast as you can 4) Whoever "wins" the triangle bashing will have their beam hit and do damage! This is quite fun and can be spectacular. Countering a demo move looks really cool. After the first one is activated, hammer square, triangle and circle together quickly, and if it worked your character will power up their energy attack. The two beams meet and then you both hammer triangle, the beams will push each other back and forth and whichever beam is the longest after about 10 seconds gets the hit! I find this is fun in Two-Player and Championship mode where you are playing other people. Its not much fun against the CPU and for those battles I think like the Meteors it is better turned off for a quicker, more enjoyable fight, unless you fancy getting some practice on. In my fights against the CPU I have noticed they seem to win a DEMO move "tug of war" about 75% of the time, not matter how fast or slowly you bash the buttons, bah. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- d) SMASH METEORS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Quite frankly I dislike the Smash Meteor system. I usually turn it off in the options menu, I think they are awkward to perform and interrupt the flow of the game. But that's my opinion. To begin a Smash Meteor press R2 and forwards while up close to your opponent. This should send your opponent flying backwards. You then have the choice of three Meteors to perform. 1) Rush punch = Square + Triangle 2) Rush Kick = Circle + Triangle 3) Blast Meteor = Triangle + Cross To successfully pull of the first hit, you need to keep pressing the directional button forwards. If you see the word M.T.O. 01 appear at the bottom of the screen you can then input up to ten more, this time you can press the directional button in any direction as you perform it. It doesn't have to be in the direction of your opponent. Timing them can be tricky, its advisable to keep repeating the button presses for the Meteor you want to ensure it registers. If a Smash Meteor catches you, you'll need to defend against each one specifically. Defending against a Smash Meteor 1) Against a Rush Punch press Square + Cross 2) Against a Rush Kick press Circle + Cross 3) Against a Blast Meteor press Square and Circle If you successfully defend and are quick enough you can counter with a Smash Meteor of your own. Again to avoid huge frustration, it is better I think to switch these off against the CPU. The CPU fighters are very good at chaining Meteor against you, and very good at escaping from yours. Better saved for two-player bouts I feel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ e) SURVIVING THE GAME MODES ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Battle Mode is the equivalent of Arcade Mode. Choose this mode and you will need to fight through several rounds against various other fighters before meeting the big boss character "Super Baby". Then the game ends. Any secret fighters you fought have been added to the roster, although they cannot be saved there. Two-Player Battle is simply Two-player, one-on-one Vs. Mode. In Championship, eight players can take part. You only fight two at a time but you work your way through two rounds until only two remain to fight it out for the championship. In Option mode you can do several things. You can turn the Demo moves and Smash Meteors off and on. You can alter the CPU difficulty and most usefully of all, you can take part in a Training mode, where you can practice against each other without losing any energy or getting knocked out. Finally there is Build Up Mode, which is discussed at length in section 5 of this guide. ========================================================================= *********************** 4) MOVELISTS/STRATEGY *************************** ========================================================================= To unlock the secret characters enter the following code at the title screen: Left, right, up, down, left, right, up, down, triangle x 5, square x 9 A "boop" noise indicates correct entry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- a) GOKU (Super Goku and Super Saiyen Goku) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "THE PERFECT WARRIOR WHO OVERCOMES ALL DANGERS, SANGOKU" SPECIAL MOVES Kamehameha b, d, f, Ki Blast Super Kamehameha b, d, f, Ki Blast Aerial Bomb f, d, kick (while jumping) Elbow Hit f, f, punch Flying Knee Hit d, u, kick Downward Hit f, d, kick Punch Combo d, f, punch Kick Combo b, d, f, kick Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Gut Punch f, block (in close) Spirit Bomb f, b, d, u, Ki Blast (Dark Haired Goku only) STRATEGY: Well its Goku, the star of Dragon Ball, you wouldn't expect him to suck now would you? In all forms he play very well and is one of the fighters best suited to newcomers to the game. He is good in close combat and you can use the ELBOW HIT to get into an opponents face quickly. His KNEE HIT is good for taking out those who like to hover around near you and the DOWNWARD ASSAULT can be a nasty surprise for a downed opponent. Surprisingly though his energy attacks are less useful than you would expect. Both his standard ones are slow to power-up and easy to see coming. Dark Haired Goku's SPIRIT BOMB is awesomely destructive, but again easy to avoid and Goku is extremely vulnerable in the few seconds it takes to build. Better to save any huge energy draining attacks like that for near the end, especially if an opponent has over drained their own Ki and cannot attack you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- b) LITTLE GOKU (Super Little Goku) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "HE MAY SEEM SMALL, BUT CHIBI GOKU IS THE MOST FEARED FIGHTER IN THE UNIVERSE" SPECIAL MOVES Kamehameha b, d, f, Ki Blast Super Kamehameha d, b, f, Ki Blast Headbutt Combo d, f, kick Mobile Bomb b, d, f, punch Super Kick f, d, kick (while jumping) Headbutt d, f, block Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Energy Push f, block (in close) STRATEGY: Well after Pilaf's wish poor Goku gets busted down to kid size again in Dragon Ball: GT! Actually this improves over adult Goku somewhat as due to the dodgy collision detection in this game, small fighters are actually immune to some attacks from , larger fighters! A wicked in-close fighter the HEADBUTT. SUPER KICK and BOMB all come out at lightning speed and can cause major headaches for all opponents especially the big ones like Cell and Piccolo. Also like Pan it's a good idea to mix up flying into your tactics here as his speed makes it less laborious and more effective than with other fighters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- c) TRUNKS (Super Trunks and Super Saiyen Trunks) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "TRUNKS IS A SAIYA MAN RAISED IN THE CITY AND DESCENDENT OF VEGETA" SPECIAL MOVES Burning Attack b, d, f, Ki Blast Exterminate Discharge d, b, f, Ki Blast Charging Kick d, b, kick Multi Kick f, f, kick Sliding Kick d, d, f, kick Spin Kick f, b, f, punch Energy Spread d, f, Ki Blast Gut Punch f, block (in close) STRATEGY: The manual recommends trunks as the easiest to use, and although the manual is crap in some respects, here I agree. He is a nifty fighter, who benefits from having his standard forwards and backwards move (d-pad left or right) as the fastest in the game allowing him to hop in and out of close combat fighing with more ease than most others in the game. His offence is mainly geared around kicks all of which are superb and vicious combo attacks. His legs are longer than you would think allowing a good attack range. Finally his ENERGY SPREAD fires out in three directions making it easy to catch a flying opponent. His downside is possibly his lack of punch attacks limit his effectiveness in close and his energy attacks although fast to come out don't seem to be as powerful s some others. Otherwise like Goku an excellent character for the newbie fighter. SS. Trunks looks different from Trunks and Super Trunks as he is Future Trunks from the DBZ Android saga, but he fights exactly the same (and looks cooler to!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- d) SUPER VEGETA ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "THE PROUDEST SAIYA MAN ELITE IN THE WORLD, SUPER VEGETA." SPECIAL MOVES Big Bang Attack b, d, f, Ki Blast Final Flash d, b, f, Ki Blast Elbow Hit f, f, punch Super Hit d, f, kick Downward Arrow Kick d, u, kick Hammer of Vegeta d, u, punch Self Destruct f, b, d, u, Ki Blast Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Energy Push f, block (in close) STRATEGY: Woah, he may be small and have stumpy arms and legs, but this is Majin Vegeta. That's Vegeta powered up by the evil magic of Babidi in the DBZ Buu Saga. Look att eh blue energy that crackles off him! Anyway, this guy is made for pure all out attack. He has his Saiyen Pride right! The ELBOW HIT and HAMMER OF VEGETA can get Vegeta right in and on top of an opponent if he has been pushed back. Use his short arms and legs to excel in his in-close, speedy barrages of kicks and punches. His Energy attacks power up fast, although the push and opponent back. His SELF DESTRUCT won't actually hurt Vegeta, but sends out a huge wave of destructive energy that's can be hard for an opponent to avoid. But it will drain a HUGE amount of Vegetas energy so, if you find him puffing and panting afterwards and your opponent managed to deflect or dodge it, you could be in big trouble. Like in the cartoon, that's a last resort. Vegeta is my fave character in the game AND cartoon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- e) GOHAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "GOHAN IS A SUPERB WARRIOR, TRAINED BY GOKU AND PICCOLO" SPECIAL MOVES Magic Lighting Strike b, d, f, Ki Blast Kamehameha d, b, f, Ki Blast Aerial Cut Kick d, f, kick Knee Hit f, b, f, kick Aerial Hit f, d, kick (while jumping) Vicious Elbow d, f, punch Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Snap Punch f, block (in close) STRATEGY: blah, Gohan. Sorry I find it hard to get excited about Gohan, he always feels like a faster, but weaker version of Goku, without Little Gokus superb close combat skills. His stance does benefit him in some ways, I have seen some high attacks from Piccolo and Cell miss him, due to his crouching posture. But really this version is not great and not that exciting to fight with. If you like him well that's your prerogative, but in all the games I have played so far, Gohan just comes off as a weak Goku. This is Mystic Gohan from DBZ Buu saga. OK Rant now: That annoyed me, we spent a bajillion episodes waiting for him to have his power raised. He shows up to fight Buu, we get one episode of him kicking Buu's butt, then we find out Buu was tricking him while he waited to absorb GoTenks. The Gohan gets practically smeared across the ground until daddy shows up. ARGH!! The best Gohan would have been the one in the Cell Games saga, he would have been more interesting to use. Small, fast and with some real super energy attacks. All I can say is as he grew up he made the right choice to give up fighting. BAH! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- f) PAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "WHAT A CHARMING TOMBOY PAN IS." SPECIAL MOVES Side Atomic Blitz b, d, f, Ki Blast Twin Energy Balls d, b, f, Ki Blast Eagle Attack d, u, kick Jump Multikick d, f, kick Super Uppercut f, b, f, punch Punch Assault d, f, punch Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Shove f, block (in close) STRATEGY: Pan is Videl (Hercules daughter) and Gohan's daughter, making her Goku and Herclues Grandaughter. She appears in the last couple of episodes of DBZ and is a regular in DB:GT. In this game she is the only girl, but has some good points to take advatage of. She is small and like I said about Little Goku, some Ki blasts and attacks from larger characters may not hit them at all, or only in part. She is the fastest in the game making flying a useful part of her strategy. You want to be buzzing about an opponent wearing them down with her jumping attacks like the EAGLE and her MULTI kicks and punch combos. Try not to stay in close to long though, use f+block (shove) to knock an opponent down and retreat. Also Pan has one glitch in her fighting style. She cannot hit certain grounded opponents, like Goku or Vegeta. Her Ki, punch and kick will miss (her low kick actually is a raised one). She can connect with larger ones like Piccolo and Cell, but not many others. So be aware of that and don't bother going into attack those people you can't hit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- g) PICCOLO ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "PICCOLO, A NAMEK WARRIOR EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN THE GODS THEMSELVES." SPECIAL MOVES Magical Light Attack b, d, f, Ki Blast Luminous Explosion d, b, f, Ki Blast Killer Aerial Explosion f, f, f, kick Sonic Kick f, b, f, kick Mystical Attack f, f, punch Flying Kick f, d, kick (while jumping) Spin Kick b, d, f, kick Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Stomach Smash f, block (in close) STRATEGY: This was where I realised the manual was talking crap. Piccolo does not have incredible speed. Extensive tests by me showed that when he and another character attack at the same time, Piccolo loses 9/10. Hmmm. However it's advice about keeping him at a distance is valid. His MYSTICAL ATTACK is lame and too short ranged and if you are going to make use th SONIC KICK and the AERIAL EXPLOSION, be prepared for it to miss most of its hits if you are against a small opponent! Arggh. Easily the trickiest character to win with in the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- h) FREIZA ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "THE NAME OF THE CRUEL WARRIOR FRIEZA RINGS THROUGHOUT THE UNVERSE." SPECIAL MOVES Killer Ball b, d, f, Ki Blast Evil Energy d, b, f, Ki Blast Elbow Hit f, f, punch Super Tail Hit b, d, f, Ki Blast Sly Downward Hit f, d, kick (while jumping) Kick Combo f, f, kick Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Quick Punch f, block STRATEGY: Fighting as Freiza is all about getting the most out of his long tail. His small arms and lack of movement speed means he is ineffective close up. But back off a bit and activate the KICK COMBO and SUPER TAIL HIT and you see some powerful and damaging moves taking place. His KILLER BALL and EVIL ENERGY are also two of the better Ki attacks in the game. So as you keep opponents back keep chucking those out when you can, but watch you're energy. Freiza is rather slow in the air, better to keep him grounded. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- i) CELL ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "PERFECT CELL IS MADE UP OF THE CELLS OF THE MOST POWERFUL WARRIORS." SPECIAL MOVES Kamehameha b, d, f, Ki Blast Evil Energy d, b, f, Ki Blast Climbing Attack d, u, punch Cell Combo f, u, f, punch Slider d, f, kick Energy Flash d, b, u, f, Ki Blast Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Snap Kick f, block (in close STRATEGY: The biggest character in the game alas means he can be hit with the largest array of energy attacks. Even when crouching they'll hit him because f his tall head. He is also sluggish, luckily he is quite resilient, and most of his moves cause serious pain. Actually it is a good idea to keep Cell in close, his moves speed up a bit when toe-to-toe with the opponent. And whereas his standard punch and kick would miss Pan and Little Goku a few steps away, up close they will connect. Uses his fast SLIDER move to keep getting back into an opponents face and use your superior strength to smash their health bar down before yours. His KAMEHAMEHA is actually faster to come out than Goku's and a good final move if you can pull it off as is the ENERGY FLASH which is similar to Vegata's self-destruct. A tricky character to begin with, but rewards patience to become quite formidable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- j) MAJIN BUU ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "MAJIN BOO, THE MOST POWERFUL AND EVIL CHARACTER IN THE HISTORY OF DRAGONBALL" SPECIAL MOVES Energy Ball b, d, f, Ki Blast Vicious Jet d, b, f, Ki Blast Twist Kick d, f, kick Extended Punch f, b, f, punch Killer Hit b, d, f, punch Flying Hand Slap d, b, f, punch Energy Spread d, f, Ki Blast Self Destruct f, b, d, u, Ki Blast Butt Attack f, block (in close) STRATEGY: This is Buu, last and meanest form! And it shows in this game. He has a crazy amount of weird attacks making him unpredictable and lethal at all ranges of attack. His FLYING HAND and EXTENDED PUNCH slap an opponent up from a great distance. His TWIST KICK and KILLER Hit come out lightning fast. His ENERGY SPREAD is also very cool as it fires five Ki bolts across five directions, good for catching those pesky flying players. In close combat his basic punches and kicks are insanely kick, about the only downside is that his ENERGY BALL and VICIOUS Jet are a tad slow to come out and his SELF DESTRUCT has rather a short range and is easy for an opponent to back away from (looks funny though!). Like Vegeta's this does not kill him, just drains a lot of Ki energy. Crazy and unpredictable, once you get to grips with his wild moves he can be one of the most devastating fighters in the game (unsurprising, that's what he was in the series as well!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- k) SUPER VEGETTO ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A FUSION OF GOKU AND VEGETA USING MAGICAL EARRINGS" SPECIAL MOVES Kamehameha b, d, f, Ki Blast Energy Beam b, d, f, Ki Blast Kick Combo d, b, kick Teleport Kick b, d, u, kick Aerial Bomb f, d, kick (while jumping) Rising Cossack Kick d, u, kick Roundhouse f, f, kick Energy Barrage d, f, Ki Blast Savage Punch f, block (in close) STRATEGY: This is the only proper secret character in the game and Veggeto absolutely kicks ass. The only warrior to almost defeat Super Majin Buu, you would expect him to have a lot of good moves at his disposal. Well he takes the best from Goku, the KAMEHAMEHA and his powerful range of kicks, from Vegeta the speed and aggression. Combined you get the best fighter in the game. Great at any range all his special moves come out insanely fast. He can move about the screen speedily with his TELEPORT KICK, he can catch flyers with the COSSACK KICK and his KAMEHAMEHA and ENERGY BEAM power-up almost instantaneously. Speedy, powerful, possessed of a large range of moves, great at offence and defence. He is easy to use, so if you can't win with the rest of the characters, input the unlocking code and grab this fighter. He's the ultimate DBZ fighter! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- l) SUPER SAIYEN 4 GOKU ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "THE ULTIMATE SAIYEN FORM, GOKU THE STRONGEST FIGHTER IN THE UNIVERSE." You'll notice he looks a bit odd. He is much larger than normal, with fur and a tail. This is because he is drawing on his original Saiyen power, the ability to turn into a huge ape and fusing it to his Super Siayen power. Later in the series, Vegeta and Goku reach this level and fuse to produce Super Saiyen 4 Gogeta (a fusion dance fusion). But before that, this form of Goku is the most powerful ever seen. This really comes over in the game as well. SS4 Goku only takes about half damage from attacks and doles out practically double damage with his own attacks. He has all of Gokus moves and no more, but he fights very, very slowly and this is his only weakness. Fighting a SS4 Goku in two-player can be very frustrating as he can destroy with a few hits and you need to pummel him with all you have got. He's actually more fun to use in Build Up Mode where you concentrate on building the most kickass fighter ever and with SS4 Goku as a really awesome starting point. ========================================================================= ************************** 5) BUILD UP MODE ***************************** ========================================================================= Build-Up mode allows you to customise a character to your style of play, build them to a high level and pit them against friend's customised fighters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- a) BUILDING A CHARACTER ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Build Up Mode is straightforward. You must work you way though several Blocks of fighters, battling to score points. As you build up points you level up and become more powerful. Defeat everyone in the block and a Boss appears. Defeat them and you can move onto the next block. For example, the first Block is block 1. The default ten characters are there to fight, once all have been defeated, Super Little Goku appears as a Boss. Defeat him and Block 2 is now accessible. You'll see that Super Little Goku is now on the roster, you now have eleven people to fight. Do that and the next Boss appears, Super Trunks, again beat him to access block 3 and now Super Little Goku and Super Trunks are in the line-up, and so on. When you start you'll see you health bar is far less than those you fight. The idea is not to rush onwards defeating each character and going though the blocks as fast as you can. You must fight and refit early opponents to gain points to level up with and get your energy bar longer and your attacks and defence more powerful. You get points for a loss, more points for a win and more especially if you can beat someone at a higher level. The more you sue a technique the better it will get. Its tempting to build up only a few moves to quickly become super strong in a couple of areas, BUT in the later blocks the AI will pick up on you weak points and not allow you exploit your strongest moves. If you find that has happened, go back to some earlier blocks and start building up those neglected moves. You can then pit your Built Up characters against a friend and see how creating a fighter that suits your own style works or doesn't! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- b) IMPORTING DATA from Dragon Ball: Ultimate Battle 22 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you possess a copy of Dragon Ball: Ultimate Battle 22 in the same format ie. Both UK PAL or both Japanese NTSC, you can carry your built up character from DBZUB22 into Final Bout (I'm pretty sure you can't convert a Japanese NTSC Battle 22 character into a USA NTSC Final Bout one, but don't quote me on that). However in practice this is very limited. Only a few characters appear in both games, eg. Vegeta, Goku, Cell, Freiza. And many of the moves are different to those in DBUB22. If you have a character built up like C18 or Mr. Satan who does not appear in Final Bout you can convert the data into one of the Final Bout characters. To be honest, it doesn't seem to make much noticeable difference. If you can't be bothered building up a character in Final Bout it gives you the chance to make a one up from the more enjoyable Battle 22. But don't be fooled into thinking you'll see your 2D Battle 22 character reborn in glorious 3D. To do this anyway you should put your memory card with your chosen DBZUB22 character saved onto in slot one of the psx and load up Dragon Ball: Final Bout. Go into Build Up Mode and choose the conversion option. If you have more than one character saved on the card, it will allow you to choose which one then which Final Bout character you want the data converted into. It will then save your new Final Bout character in a different file. Voila! The level of your character will be roughly halved. So a level 62 DBUB22 character becomes a level 30 Final Bout one. It also tries to carry over the skills in some form. So for example if you build up a lot of Ki moves your Final battle characters Ki moves will be strong, if you concentrated on the in close attacks like throws and Ki Ball extinguish then your f+block move will be strong. If you concentrated on a kicking or punching move it rather erratically assigns those skills to the characters normal kick and punch attacks etc. Unlike DBUB22 though in Final Bout you can replay the earlier blocks of fighters to build up neglected areas. So if you want to quickly get a character at about level 30-40 who has a nice big energy bar that will make the earlier bouts far easier then loading in a character from DBUB22 is a good shortcut! ========================================================================= *************************** 6) BACKGROUND ******************************* ========================================================================= Dragon Ball Z currently airs daily on the UK digital channel CNX. Until 2002 the series was relatively unknown in Britain. It had aired patchily on the Cartoon Network here, but it didn't get a real following here until 2002. That year Cartoon Network launched a more adult orientated cartoon channel on UK digital cable and satellite. It runs DBZ four times daily in one-hour blocks with early episodes running early on and new episodes later in the day. It was off the back of this massively increased exposure that two Dragon Ball games were re-released for the Psone. Originally out in 1996, Dragon Ball: Final Bout and Dragon Ball: Ultimate Battle 22 sank without trace due to the fact the show had not ever aired here at that time. Now the show is beginning to develop the same kind of dedicated fan base it has enjoyed in the USA for some years now. Many, many games have been released over the years based on the show. Few have made it to western shores. The ones that are currently available in the UK are, Dragon Ball: Final Bout and Dragon Ball: Ultimate Battle 22 both fighting games for the PlayStation. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, a fighting game for the PS2. Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku, an rpg for the GameBoy Advance and Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Warriors, a card battle game for the GameBoy Colour. So here's a quick "bluffers guide" to the huge world that the Dragon Ball games are set in. For excellent in-depth episode guides, character lists, translations, film info etc check out this site: http://pojo.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- a) DRAGON BALL ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The cartoons themselves were based on a popular Manga series by Akira Toriyama that ran throughout the 1980's in the magazine Shonen Jump. The initial Japanese cartoon series debuted in 1985 and was called Dragon Ball; in it Goku was not a super-human alien but a monkey-tailed boy. He joins up with a young woman called Bulma who is searching for the seven Dragon Balls that can grant any wish when brought together. This first series saw Goku battle evil villain Piccolo, grow up, marry Chi Chi and have a son, Gohan. It ran for 153 episodes, and has only recently been dubbed into English. During the series any familiar faces are introduced. Oolong the shape-changer, Yamcha and his cat, Ten Shin Han, Baba the Fortune Teller, Chi Chi, Master Roshi the man who trains Young Goku and Krillin and teaches Goku the Kamehameha and Kami, the Namek Guardian of the Earth. The plotline revolves around the search for the seven Dragon Balls and various tournaments that pit the characters against each other. The Evil King Piccolo (the evil side of Kame) also threatens the earth, but is defeated by Goku. Piccolo is reborn as a less evil version in DBZ. In the final episode of Dragon Ball, Goku and Chi Chi get married. The Dragon Ball series had always tended to emphasize comedy over action, but soon a new series was to start that would become more dramatic in everyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- b) DRAGON BALL Z ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dragon Ball Z was split into three huge sagas, the Saiyen Saga, the Android Saga and the Buu Saga. These were sub divided by the US distributors into smaller sagas. Dragon Ball Z ran for a total of 276 episodes The Saiyen Saga begins with Gokus brother Raditz coming to earth and telling Goku of his true origins. He is actually an alien know as a Saiyen, who was sent to earth as a boy to destroy all life upon it. But he forgot his mission and grew up good. As Raditz wants to carry out the original plan, Goku has to join forces with Piccolo and his young son Gohan, together they kill raditz, but Goku also dies. Now in Otherworld he seeks out King Kai to help him train to be a better fighter. Meanwhile Piccolo kidnaps Gohan and begins to teach him to fight having seen his potential. Gohan transforms into a huge out of control Ape called Ozaru, so Piccolo removes his tail to prevent it happening again. Other Saiyens hear of the Dragon Balls and Vegeta under the command of Freiza comes down to earth. He transforms into a Ozaru and beats Goku (who has returned) badly. Krillin and Yajerobe manage to cut of Vegeta tail and Gohan grows his back and beats Vegeta, who retreats back to Freiza command post. Gohan, Bulma and Krillin travel to Piccolos planet Namek, Vegeta shows up. Vegeta has a dragon ball, Bulma et al have a Dragon Ball and Freiza has five. Goku now recovered speeds off towards Namek. Here he takes on the forces of Captain Ginyu and defeats them all after some body swapping shenanigans take pace. More fighting ensues when Vegeta tries to take the Dragon Balls from Freiza. Vegeta is killed but before he dies he tells that Frieza destroyed the Saiyen planet and that he and Goku are the only Saiyens left, Freiza had held him in bondage and now Goku must revenge the Saiyens. After some jiggery-pokery with the Dragon Balls, everyone who was killed comes back to life. Finally Freiza and Goku have a big fight on Namek which leaves Freiza almost dead and Namek gets blown up. Luckily the Nameks have shipped out to another planet. The Android saga begins with Goku travelling back to earth. In the meantime a restored Freiza is on his way to earth for revenge. Tein, Piccolo, Vegeta, Krillin, Yamcha etc await them, but suddenly a young man turns up called Trunks. He kills Freiza easily and then sits down to wait for Goku. He privately tells Goku he is from the future and is Vegeta and Bulma's son. In his future two Androids created by Dr. Jaro, androids 17 and 18 have laid waste to the earth and Goku could not help because he died from a viral heart disease. Goku begins to suffer from the disease and takes Trunks medicine. As he suffers the rest track down the androids and kill some of them but they are not the ones Trunks remembers. They then find an older version of Trunks time capsule and realise that someone travelled back after Trunks to an earlier time and we discover this is Cell a super android who is made up of cells from all the greatest fighters. As Android 17 and 18 begin looking for Goku, so Cell starts a reign of terror absorbing humans for food. Piccolo visits Kame at the Lookout and they reabsorb into one being. Dende the young Namek is made the new Guardian of the Earth. If Trunks had been successful he would have killed Androids 17 and 18, so Cell travelled back further to stop him and so he could absorb Androids 17 and 18 and become perfect Cell which he does. He then sets up the Cell games which introduces Hercule to the storyline. All the Z fighters battle Cell, Android 18 is released from Cells body. Gohan beats Cell badly so Cell tries to self destruct to destroy earth. Goku teleports him and Cell away to King Kais planet where they all die in the explosion.. This time Goku cannot be bought back to life again. Cell survives and returns to try and destroy earth but Gohan's pain and rage utterly obliterates him. Android 18 has her self-destruct bomb wished out of her by Krillin as they have fallen in love and Trunks returns to his future. The Buu Saga begins with a little fun as Gohan is now a teenager, he has a young brother Goten (conceived before Goku died), Vegeta and Bulma have a young son called Trunks (born just before the Android saga) and Krillin and Android 18 have a daughter called Marron. Gohan is at High School and likes to pretend to be a hero called Saiyaman. Videl the daughter of Hercule suspects it is Gohan and finally they hook up and he teaches her to fly. A Martial Arts tourney is announced and Goku returns to earth, he can spend one day there before he must return to Otherworld. he has Kibito and Supreme Kai with him. During the Tourney some people steal energy from Gohan; Kibito, Gohan, Kai, Vegeta, Krillin, Piccolo and Goku leave to investigate. They discover a wizard called Babidi plans to resurrect an evil being called Majin Buu using energy drained from powerful fighters. He manages to tap into Vegeta's dark heart and gets him to fight Goku which provides the energy needed to resurrect Buu. The first form of Buu is fat and jolly but hugely destructive, Supreme kai takes Gohan away to Otherworld to have him train in safety. Vegeta self-destructs but this does not kill Buu. Goku decides to teach Goten and Trunks how to fuse into one being, Gotenks using a dance. He then powers up to Super saiyen 3 and fights Buu. He tells Buu he should not take orders from babidi and leaves as his time on earth grows short. Buu kills Babidi and at first is destructive but he sets up a home and when Hercule comes to try and kill him they become friends. Hercule almost manages to turn Majin Buu good, but the actions of some snipers spoil this when they kill Hercule and Buus dog Pete. Buu brings them back to life but his anger splits him in two, one good, one evil. The evil one consumes the good and becomes Super Buu. Super Buu takes on the powerful Gotenks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Piccolo tries to seal him in, but he escapes and kills everyone on the whole planet earth except for Hercule, Pete and Ten Chin Han. He eats all at the Lookout, Bulma, Videl, Krillin etc except Dende who is throw down to earth and joins up with Hercule. Gotenks then escapes and fights Super Buu some more, nearly defeating him, but then the fusion wears off. Just as Buu is about to kill Goten and Trunks, a powered up Gohan appears and beats Buu up. Buu manages to trick Goten and Trunks into refusing and then absorbs them and Piccolo becoming more powerful than Gohan. Goku look on from otherworld in horror, but Old Kai sacrifices his life to allow Goku to live again and then gives him a pair of earrings to use to fuse with Gohan. However Gohan is absorbed by Buu before this can happen. Luckily Vegeta is allowed to return to earth and they fuse into Vegetto. Vegetto could kill Buu but instead they allow themselves to be absorbed. Inside Buu they separate and find the others, including Fat Good Buu. They free them from inside Buu and escape from his body. They retreat to the Kai planet and in horror see Buu reform as the amoral, super destructive Kid Buu. Kid Buu destroys earth, Goku rescued Hercule and Dende just before this happens. Kid Buu starts to look for them on Otherworld, but they lure him to the Kai planet. There Goku fights him but cannot beat him, Vegeta takes Buu on to give Goku time to power-up, and is nearly killed, but Hercule stops Buu killing him. Buu attempts to attack Hercule, this makes Fat Buu appear out of Kid Buu and they begin to fight each other. While the Buu's fight Vegeta gets Dende to use the Namek Dragonballs to bring all those destroyed since the World Martial Arts Tournament began back to life. Following Vegeta's plan, Goku decides to build a huge spirit bomb to kill Buu with and collects Ki from everyone in the universe. At first the people of Earth won't contribute, but Hercule pleads with them and they agree to do it for their hero. Goku hurls the Spirit Bomb and obliterates Buu for good. Goku wishes that Buu could be reincarnated in a human boy of good heart. The final episodes are set some years later. Goten and Trunks are teens, Fat Buu has been accepted by humanity after the memories of his evil doings were wiped with the DragonBalls, Gohan and Videl have married and had a daughter Pan and Buu has indeed come back as a boy called Uub. Goku takes Uub off to train for five years and so begins Dragon Ball GT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- c) DRAGON BALL GT ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dragon Ball: GT (GT = Grand Tour) ran for 63 episodes and closes the saga. Original creator Akira Toriyama had nothing to do with this incarnation. It begins more humorous to make up for the seriousness of DBZ, but gets more violent as the saga progresses as that's what the fans wanted. The saga begins with Goku and Uub fighting up on the lookout. Then Emperor Pilaf from the original Dragon Ball series turns up looking for the Ultimate Dragon Balls, these are also known as the Black Star Dragon balls that were created by Kamesama while he was going though and evil phase. In anger Pilaf accidentally wishes Goku was smaller so he would be easier to defeat (that's why you see small Goku in this game in a DBGT outfit). Then the balls scatter around the universe, the only way Goku can be made normal is to collect all the Ultimate Dragon Balls So a spaceship is built and off they all trot, they manage to find all the Dragon Balls and return to earth. Goku gives them to Dende, but Dende is not himself, in fact no one is on earth. A monster called Super Baby has planted eggs inside everyone on earth to make them his slaves. Goku tries to defeat him in his Super Saiyen 3 form but cannot hold it for long as a child. He trains more and teleports to a planet called Plant that Super Baby has made. Here he battles an enslaved Vegeta and loses. In a rage he transforms into a Golden Ozaru (ape) and starts trashing the place. Pan appears and pleads with him to stop. A golden glow covers Goku and he transforms into his Super Saiyen 4 form, which him as an adult with red eyes, some fur and a tail. There is some more fighting and some water is discovered that will stop people being baby's slaves. All the people on earth are teleported to Plant, but Piccolo stays on earth as it is about to explode saying that if he dies the Ultimate Black Star Dragon Balls can never be used again. He then says how proud he is of Gohan and dies when Earth explodes. Dende then wishes back Earth with the normal Dragon Balls. Goku is still stuck in Child form and enters the next world Martial Tournament in the kids section, which he manages to lose! Uubu also take part and ends up fighting Hercule, who he allows to win so Earth can still have its hero. Then somehow Dr. Jaro, Cell and Freiza turn up along with Android 17. Goku defeats Cell and Freiza but Android 17 kills Krillin and then Android 18 when she refuses to join with him. He merges with another Android 17 created by Dr. Jaro and becomes Super Android 17. When Goku gets back to earth he kills Super Android 17, but when they try to revive all those he killed with the Dragon balls they are all cracked and don't work. A dragon appears and says each time a wish was made, evil came into the Dragon Balls. Now they don't care about wishes, seven evil dragons are loose and Goku must take off and defeat them. He travels the world defeating the dragons until he reaches the last, Li-Shenlon who has become perfect. Goku cannot defeat him, but then Vegeta and Bulma arrive. Bulma fires a ray at Vegeta that turns him Super Saiyen 4 and Goku transforms as well, they then fuse to become Super Saiyen 4 Gogeta. He can't destroy Li-Shenlon though, so back as Goku he powers up a Spirit Bomb and kills him with that. Shenlon returns to normal as do the Dragon Balls, but Shenlon says there will be no more wishes for 100 years. Goku offers his life in return for one last wish. That the earth be returned to how it was before the Dragons trashed it. Shenlon grants the wish and Goku gets on his back wishing everyone goodbye. He visits all his friends, even the now dead Piccolo and says good-bye to them all. Goku goes back to Shenlon and falls asleep on his head. The seven dragon balls circle around him before absorbing into his body one-by-one. The final Four Star dragon ball (the one that united him with Bulma and started the whole story) disappears into his forehead. 100 years pass, and at a tournament Pan is an old woman watching grandsons Goku Jnr and Vegeta Jnr battle in a tournament. She sees Goku as a young man watching at the front, but he vanishes before she can reach him. The last thing we see is Goku leaving the arena smiling to himself... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *********************************************************************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Feel free to email me about any aspect of this guide, any contributions you would like to make will be fully credited if used and are more than welcome.
