My Review ===================================================================== Who hasn't heard of adventure games? Whether it's the really old ones, such as Zork, or the new ones, such as Grim Fandango. These are all classed as adventure games. Zork, was, and still is a classic. It was made in the early 1980's I believe, and some people still know what it is even today! What made the game so special was the fact that you were in control of the character. You chose whether to go north or south, east or west, whether to look under the rug, or to kick the cat out the window, and the fact that you had so much control over the game was what made it such a classic. So naturally, a game such as Zork spawned a whole new genre of games. The genre was called 'adventure games', something hardly anyone had heard about in the early 1980's, but which most people have heard about today. One of these adventure games, which was made around 1987 by Sierra on-line, was called: Space Quest I - The Sarien Encounter. Graphics - 9/10 The graphics of a game are not always important, and I do realise that the storyline and gameplay are the most important aspects, but graphics are the first thing that people see about a game. So people sometimes people are drawn too, or drawn away from games because of their graphics. Now the graphics in Space Quest I, by today's standard, are bad. But remember, back in the days when this game was only just released, the state of the art 16 colour graphics, and the brillant animation, made this game a classic. Story - 8/10 In Space Quest I, you take control of Roger Wilco, a lowly janitor aboard the spaceship Arcada. One minute, you're sleeping peacefully in a broom closet aboard the spaceship, and then suddenly aliens take over the ship, steal the very important star generator and kill every human on board. Tsk tsk, something must be done about this, and seeing as Roger Wilco is the only living human on board, it looks like you're the only one who can save the day! Sound - 5/10 Agh! I don't know how people could stand the sound of this game in the 1980's, as there is no sound at all apart from the beeps and boops eminating from the PC's internal speaker. And the loud sound can be very annoying at times. Thankfully, there is a way to turn the sound off, by simply pressing F2, the sound will be off. Actually, once you know about this function key, you might even leave the sound on so you can hear what people actually had to put up with. Gameplay - 8/10 Very fun! The plot draws you along. You really want to know what happens next, and what things to try. The game is also very difficult in places, requiring you to really think about the puzzle before you can get past it. The game also has sub-games (which is unusual for a game made around this time), such as playing an arcade machine, and flying a skimmer through a meteor storm. The game is linear, meaning that you don't have to follow a strict and certain path. And another aspect of what makes the game so good is trying to find all the points (202 is the most you can get). When you complete the game for the first time, it's unlikely that you will find all the points, as there are many ways to complete this game. Replayability - 8/10 Wow! This game has better replayability than some of the newer games that are made today! When you complete the game, it's likely that your score isn't going to be 202/202, so you'll probably want to go back and try and find things that get you more points. By the 2nd game, you might have maximum points. By the 3rd game, you'll have probably found out that there's still a lot more to do in the game besides getting maximum points. By the 4th game, you might have found everything. And from then on, you'll probably just play the game for the fun of it! Overall - 9/10 Finding all the points, playing the arcade games, finding easter eggs (little secrets put there by programmers), and generally having a good time, make this a very fun game to play. ===================================================================== 2. Walkthrough ===================================================================== Although this walkthrough is written to show you how to get maximum points, it doesn't show you all the places and things to do in the game. Try exploring around a bit to see some interesting things that seem to have no point in the game. (I still haven't found a use for that plant on planet Kerona yet). Try completing the game by using this walkthrough first, and if you're still having problems getting maximum points, read the point listing section of this guide. ===================================================================== Part 1 - Escaping the space ship Arcada ===================================================================== You stumble out of the broom closet - west - west - east - wait until man enters - walk over to the man and type "look man" - walk over to the monitor and type "look monitor" - type "astral bodies" - wait until the machine gets the data cartridge and then type "get cart" - west - west - "search man" - "get keycard" - east - enter elevator east - enter elevator - east - walk up to control panel and type "push open bay door" - east - walk up to slot and type "put keycard in slot" - enter elevator - walk to the control panel and type "push airlock button" - walk to the two buttons on the wall and type "push left button" - "push right button" - "get gadget" - "get suit" - west - walk to the control panel and type "push platform button" - walk to the left side of the pod and type "enter pod" - "close door" - "fasten seatbelt" - "push power button" - "pull lever" - "push autonav" ===================================================================== Part 2 - On the planet Kerona ===================================================================== You are in the pod which has crash landed on the desert planet Kerona - "unfasten belt" - "get kit" - "get out of ship" - walk to the front of the ship and type "get glass" - east - east - east - you should see a path leading up the mountain, go up the path until you get to a bridge - cross the bridge but stop behind the rock at the other side - after a while a spider droid should come down out of the sky, your aim is to crush the spider droid - type "push rock" but DON'T hit return just yet - SAVE - when the spider droid is between the two green plants, hit return. The rock should have crushed the spider droid. If not, restore the game and try again - When you have crushed the spider droid, continue up the path until you get to an area with a broken arch. Walk through the center of the arch, and you will go down on a secret platform - You are now in a cave. You should be able to see a rock in this area, walk up to it and type "get rock" - west - you are now in a room with a grating. In the grating is a big green blob that kills you and is REALLY annoying if you don't know how to get past it. All you have to do is walk along the top of the grating (ARGH! I spent ages looking for something to kill this thing!) - walk over to the geyser and type "put rock in geyser" - north - head to the back of the room, and then head west - walk close to the beams and then type "hold glass in beam" - follow the path that was previously blocked by the beams - SAVE - walk carefully past the acid drops - "turn dial on gadget" - east - a big head will appear, basically it says that you have to destroy a beast called Orat who is living on the surface otherwise he won't let you past! Oh well, we'll forgive the big head, who rudely returns you to the surface to go on with your quest - Follow the path down to the bottom, noticing that the bridge is becoming more and more unsteady each time you cross it - north - open kit - type "throw water" but DON'T press return - SAVE - east - press return and Orat will be blown into chunks (Note, there is an alternative, and more fun way to defeat the spider droid. See easter egg no. 5 in the easter eggs section) - walk over to the part of Orat and type "get part" - west - south - follow the path up all the way until you get to the broken arch - go down on the secret platform, and get to the big head again, remembering to avoid the blob at the grating and the acid drops - you should now be at the big head, he wants proof so type "drop part" - a door opens - north - walk up to the slot and type "put cart in slot" - note the password '6858' - "get cart" - walk over to the skimmer and type "get in skimmer" - SAVE - turn key - you've now taken off in your skimmer and must play a very annoying sub-game. What you have to do is to steer left and right avoiding the asteroids. Whenever you get to a safe spot where you see no asteroids, save the game. Eventually, you will arrive at Ulence Flats. ===================================================================== Part 3 - At Ulence Flats ===================================================================== You have arrived at Ulence Flats in your skimmer - "get key" - "get out of skimmer" - A man should come along and ask you if he can buy your skimmer for 30 buckazoids. Ignore him - enter bar - leave bar - the same man will come along again but he will ask you if he can buy your skimmer for 30 buckazoids AND a jetpack. Type "yes" - enter the bar - walk over to the bar and type "buy beer" - "drink beer" - "buy beer" - "drink beer" - "buy beer" - "drink beer" - after the third beer, two people will start talking, listen to there conversation as they say something about a sector (most likely sector HH). Now we have to find some way of getting to sector HH, and for that, we'll need money, and 24 buckazoids is not enough money. - Walk over to the arcade machine - The aim here is to win 250 buckazoids, this is not an easy task as the arcade machine is random, and as far as I know, there's no way of cheating. So save the game first, and then bet $3 on every go. This will take a while, but when you have $250 the machine should break, don't worry, this is all the money we need - west - north - east - enter Droids-B-Us - follow the person upstairs, and walk up to the white robot - "buy robot" - exit Droids-B-Us - south - west - west - north - "buy ship" - "climb ladder" - "push button" - the droid will ask you what sector you want to go to (type the sector you overheard in the bar, most likely "HH") - The ship will now take off. ===================================================================== Part 4 - Deltaur ===================================================================== "wear jetpack" - "get out of ship" - Float your way over to the door and type "open door" - enter the door - you are now in a place with an unopenable door. Fortunatly, there is a droid going in and out of the door, so when it comes out of the door, quickly rush in before the door closes - walk over to the chest and type "open chest" - "get in chest" - You will be carried to another room - "open chest" - walk over to the washing machine and type "open washing machine" - "get in washing machine" - you will change into a sarien uniform - "open washing machine" - east - walk over to the guard and type "talk guard" (Keep talking to the guard and he will keep saying different things. If at one point, he asks you if you have played Kings Quest III, respond by saying 'yes'. You will get 5 points!) - "kiss guard" - enter left elevator - west - enter elevator - east - east - east - "look suit" - walk over to the counter and type "show ID" - while the robot's gone, quickly walk to the bottom of the counter and type "get grenade" - walk over to the robot and he will give you a weapon - west - walk above the guard and type "drop grenade" - east - show ID - while the robot's gone, quickly type "get grenade" (As far as I know, you don't use this other grenade, but it gives you 1 point, so I guess it doesn't really matter) - west - west - west - uh oh! You are now revealed, be extremely careful, and save your game very often. You can fire your pulseray by pressing F6, but be warned, the guards are very quick, and your weapon will be of no use against the robots. Fire your gun when necessary! - enter elevator - east - east - "search guard" - "push button" - walk up to the star generator and type "look panel" - enter the password '6858' by using the buttons, and then press enter button (on the panel) - west - enter elevator - enter right elevator - walk over to the ship and type "enter ship" - "push button" And you've completed the game! Hopefully with 202/202 points! ===================================================================== 3. Point Listing ===================================================================== So, maybe you've completed the entire game, but you STILL can't find those last few points. If you look at the man after he's fallen over, he'll tell you the password for the data cartridge console. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What is the password for the data cartridge console? A. The password is "astral bodies". --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I get the data cartridge? A. Enter the password on the console, and it will retrieve it for you. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I get the keycard? A. There is a scientist two rooms to the west of the data cartridge console. Search the scientist to get the keycard. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I open the bay doors? A. There is a control panel near the elevator that goes to the room next to the airlock. Open the bay doors by using the panel. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I open the elevator that leads to the room next to the airlock? A. Use the keycard in the slot on the elevator. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I open the airlock? A. Enter the room just before the airlock, and there will be a panel that you can open the airlock from. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Where do I get the suit and the gadget from? A. You get the suit and the gadget in the room just before the airlock. There are two doors in the room, and between the doors are two buttons. Press the left button to get the suit, and press the right button to get the gadget. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I'm in the airlock, but I don't see any pod. Where is it? A. There is a control panel in the airlock. Push the platform button on the control panel, which will raise the pod. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I got inside the pod, But it won't let me take off. What should I do? A. First of all, close the door. Then fasten the seatbelt. Then push the power button. Next, pull the lever. And finally, push the autonav button. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ===================================================================== Questions about Kerona ===================================================================== --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Agh, my ship crashed! I can't seem to get out of it. What can I do? A. Unfasten the seatbelt. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Is there anything I need from the ship before I leave it? A. Yes, you need to get the kit. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I'm out of the ship. Is there anything else I need before I leave the area with the ship? A. Yes, there is a piece of glass where the ship crashed. It plays an important part later on in the game, so don't forget to pick it up. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I picked up a plant. What do I do with it? A. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do with the plant in the game. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Agh! A huge spider droid has just dropped out of the sky. The stupid thing keeps following me everywhere I go. Is there any way to destroy it? A. Fortunately, there is a way. There is a path going up the mountain three screens east of where the ship crashed. Go up the path until you get to a bridge. Don't worry about the spider droid, as it can't follow you up the path. Cross the bridge, but stop behind the rock at the other side. Wait for the spider droid to appear. Type "push rock" but don't hit return just yet. Save the game, and wait until the spider droid is shuffling around between the two green plants. When it is between the green plants, push the rock and it should land on the spider. It may help to have the game on a slow speed setting. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I just can't destroy the spider by pushing the rock. Is there an easier way? A. Yes, there is, but it's very difficult to do. First of all, you need to make your way to the big head. Make sure you have the gadget turned off, and when you get to the big head he will send you back out. Go to the entrance of the Orat cave, and wait there until the spider droid shows up. Enter the cave, and then quickly walk behind the rock so you avoid both the Orat and the spider. The Orat and the spider will collide, which will destroy the spider. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Apart from Orat's cave and the desert, I can't find anywhere else to go on Kerona. Where do I go? A. There is a path going up the mountain three screens east of where the ship crashed. Go up the path until you get to a bridge. Cross the bridge, and keep going up the path until you get to an arch. Walk through the arch, and a platform will take you down to a large cave. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. There is a big green monster below the grating in the cave. How can I get past it? A. Just walk along the very top of the grating. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I'm past the grating, but I can't seem to go anywhere else in the cave. Does the geyser have anything to do with this puzzle? A. Yes it does. In the first room of the cave, there was a small rock. You need to put the rock in the geyser, which will open up a secret door. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I'm in the room after the geyser. It looks like I can't go anywhere. Where do I go? A. It looks like you can't go anywhere, but you can. Walk behind the rocks, and then walk west to arrive in a new room. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I'm near some laser beams. How do I get past them? A. There was some glass outside the ship that you crash landed in. Hold the glass in the laser beams. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I get past the acid drops in the cave? A. Watch how they fall, as there is a pattern. Quickly walk under the drops to get to the other side. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I've met the big head, but I can't understand what it's saying. How do I understand it? A. Turn on the gadget, and then enter the room with the big head. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I destroy Orat? A. Open the kit, and there will be some water inside. Enter Orat's cave, and throw the water at him. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Pick up the Orat part. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What do I do with the Orat part? A. Take it back to the cave with the big head, and drop the Orat part in front of it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What do I do with the data cartridge that I got near the beginning of the game? A. You can use the data cartridge in the room with the skimmer. There is a machine with a slot that you can put the card in. It will give you a password. Remember to take the cartridge out after using it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I take off in the skimmer? A. Get in the skimmer and turn the key. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ===================================================================== Questions about Ulence Flats ===================================================================== --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I just landed at Ulence Flats. What do I do? A. First of all, get the key from the skimmer. Then get out of the skimmer. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. This man came along and asked if he could buy my skimmer for 30 buckazoids. Should I accept his offer? A. No. Avoid the man and walk into the bar. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I came out of the bar, and the man came along again and asked if he could buy my skimmer for 30 buckazoids and a jetpack. Should I accept his offer? A. Yes. No. You don't need any more money from the arcade machine. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. In Droids-B-Us, which robot do I need to buy? A. Buy the white robot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Which ship do I need to buy? A. Buy the ship at the far north of the area where ships are being sold. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I take off in the ship? A. Climb the ladder, and then push the button. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What sector do I need to go to? A. You need to go to sector HH. This sector name can be overheard by the guys at the bar when you buy and drink three beers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ===================================================================== Questions about Deltaur ===================================================================== --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I've arrived outside of Deltaur. What do I have to do? A. You need to wear the jetpack, and then get out of the ship. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do I enter Deltaur? A. Using the jetpack, float over to the door and open it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Cheats ===================================================================== 1. Hold Alt + D to enter a special mode. Now type "get object", followed by a number to get any object in the game. 2. Hold Alt + D to enter a special mode. Now type "tp", followed by a number to get to any room in the game. 3. Hold Alt + D to enter a special mode. Now type "be alien". You will turn into a Sarien! 4. Hold Alt + D to enter the special mode. Now type "position". Type an X coordinate, and a Y coordinate, and you can end up in some really weird places! 5 Hold Alt + D to enter the special mode yet again. Now type "cash" followed by a number between 1 - 200. Instant buckazoids! Woohoo! ===================================================================== 6. Easter Eggs ===================================================================== Easter eggs are special hidden things that are put in a game by the programmers just for fun. Easter eggs don't actually do much, they just provide you with fun things to try. Try some of these easter eggs: 1. At any place in the game, type "Scott" or "Scott Murphy" to get a special message. 2. Walk behind Droids-B-Us and type "take leak". Roger will say one of three messages. 3. Well, see the cheats section of this FAQ. These are cheats that are not meant to be found, so I guess they count as easter eggs. 4. When you're in the ship after just escaping Arcada, type "press don't touch button" to see a funny scene! 5. OK, I know this doesn't really count as an easter egg, but it's a little secret I guess. When you go to see the big head, and he sends you back out, go to the entrance to the orat cave. Wait there until spider shows up. Walk behind the rock so you avoid both orat and spider. Observe as they both colide... woohoo! an easy 10 points! ===================================================================== 7.
