I also updated the polls, added more FAQ, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. (V 1.1) 7/15/00 A special thanks to Bear640 for a correction about the Ice + Spark combo. (You CAN attack with it). In other news, I've finished the walkthrough section. As for Enemy Info, I have about half of the cards and I'm working on the rest so I can add the section ASAP. (V 1.0) 7/4/00 I LOVE THIS GAME!! That aside, this is just the basic version of my FAQ\Walkthrough. I only have the first three 'Planets' 'walkthroughed', but you can expect the others soon. Contents: 1) Story 2) Controls 3) The Characters 4) The Bonus Game 5) Special Abilities 6) Walkthrough 7) FAQ 8) Secrets 9) MiniGames 10) Polls 11) Shameless Self Glorification 12) Legal 'Stuff' Section 1: The Story The Manual's Story: In a distant corner of the galaxy, fairies (yes, I know it's spelled 'faeries') lived peacefully on the planet called Ripple Star. But then one day, a mysterious black cloud appeared and surrounded the peaceful planet. The cloud, a sinister force known as Dark Matter, had come in search of the fairies' secret treasure-their shining crystal. A fairy named Ribbon knew that dreadful things would come to pass if Dark Matter gained control of the powerful Crystal. She grabbed the shining stone and escaped from Ripple Star-just before the planet was completely engulfed. But as ribbon fled, three dark clouds split from the mass of Dark Matter to chase her through space. And when they caught up with her and attacked, the fairies' crystal shattered into tiny shards, which dropped like falling stars onto the many planets in the solar system. Still holding one of the Crystal Shards, Ribbon fell onto the planet called Pop Star, where-perhaps by fate-she ran smack into Kirby. After hearing her desperate plight, Kirby resolved to help Ribbon recover all of the Crystal Shards. My (The Quick) Story: Some fairy ran into Kirby and he followed her somewhere and collected Crystal Shards. The Story in ASCII Art: Never mind... Section 2: Controls L button; R button; All C buttons: Lift an enemy or power star out of your mouth, then again to throw it straight up into the air. Analog Stick; Z button: Not used Control Pad: Left or Right to walk, tap twice to run; Down to swallow enemies and copy their ability, duck or drop through some platforms A button: Jump, fly while in the air (press again to fly higher), swim upward while in the water and slide (by pressing down on the control pad and the A button) B button: Inhale enemies or blocks, exhale them, throw an enemy after lifting it, and use the copied ability Section Three: The Characters Kirby: He's Kirby. Move on. Ribbon: The faerie who tried to save the crystal and goes along with Kirby collecting them. King Dedede: Oddly enough, not an enemy. He helps you after freeing him from Dark Matter. Waddle Dee: A friend of Kirby's, he will help you later on in the game after you free him from some Dark Matter. Adeleine: An aspiring artist who paints Kirby important clues and power-ups throughout the game, once she too is freed from Dark Matter. Section Four: The Bonus Game After the completion of a level, you are whisked away to a bonus game. You and all your friends are sitting around a picnic blanket. Kirby will move back and forth until you press the A button to stop him. Then he will move his arms back and forth. The further back they are, the farther he will jump when you press the A button again. If you wait until his arms are at their highest, for example, he will jump to the first space ahead of him. There are always seven different items on the blanket: A Yellow Star A Green Star A Red Star A 1-Up A Regular Piece of Food A Tomato An Enemy Info Card Section Five: Special Abilities Beyond the normal seven abilities Kirby has, (Burn, Stone, Ice, Needle, Bomb, Spark and Cutter) in Kirby 64 it is possible to combine them there are five methods with which to do so: Swallow two enemies with special abilities Exhale one enemy into another Throw an enemy into another Exhale a power star into an enemy Throw a power star into an enemy I feel they are fairly self-explanatory, but if you would like an explanation of any method, feel free to e-mail me at reod_dai_2000@yahoo.com. Anyway, here are the descriptions: Burn: Kirby becomes a little ball of fire and shoots across a small distance Burn + Burn: Above, but it is a huge cone and travels a greater distance Burn + Stone: Become a volcano, aim left and right with the D-pad Burn + Ice: Temporarily encase yourself in enemy killing steam Burn + Needle: Become a bow and fire flaming arrows, hold down the B button to make them go farther Burn + Bomb: Cause fireworks to go off, tap the B button up to three times in the air to make them go off again Burn + Spark: Use static electricity to make Kirby go ablaze Burn + Cutter: The B button swings the sword, to release it, first press up on the D-pad and press the B button to send it flying Stone: Roll or become a little stone Kirby Stone + Stone: A larger version of the one above Stone + Ice: As a shuffleboard puck, you'll glide back and forth, freezing everything in your path Stone + Needle: Put on a hat (?) that drills; release the B button to send it flying Stone + Bomb: Throw dynamite that either explodes in five seconds or upon contact with an enemy, protect yourself with a little hardhat by pressing down on the D-pad Stone + Spark: A huge boulder is tethered to Kirby by a thin band of electricity, like a yo-yo Stone + Cutter: You become one of Kirby's friends from his previous adventures (see 'FAQ') Ice: Kirby spins around and breathes freezing air Ice + Ice: Kirby become a white snowball that will move forward until it hits a wall or plateau Ice + Needle: Spiky snowflake points surround Kirby that will freeze any enemies they touch Ice + Bomb: Kirby becomes a snowman who will detonate in five seconds or upon coming into contact with an enemy Ice + Spark: Kirby becomes a refrigerator that spits out health-replenishing items that damage any enemies they hit Ice + Cutter: Skate across the terrain, freezing enemies in your path Needle: Pointy needles make Kirby's skin sharp to say the least Needle + Needle: Similar to the Ice + Needle combination, but without the snowflake Needle + Bomb: Become one of those spiky guys that move back and forth, until you explode sending your spikes everywhere Needle + Spark: Kirby becomes a lightning rod that strikes everything above and around him (similar to Pikachu's (shudder) attack in Super Smash Brothers) Needle + Cutter: Hold the B button to keep your newly spiked arms spread apart, and release it to close them like a lobster's claws Bomb: Toss a bomb into the air Bomb + Bomb: Fire up to three tracking missiles by holding down the B button Bomb + Spark: Become a light bulb that will explode after a length of time and destroy any enemies you come into contact with Bomb + Cutter: This is quite possibly (and by that I mean 'it is') the best ability in the game. You throw a little 'Ninja Star' that explodes after about one second of contact with something Spark: Put yourself in a little sphere of electric currents Spark + Spark: A larger scale version of one spark Spark + Cutter: This is my second favorite ability. Press the B button to take out and swing a double-edged light saber (like Darth Maul's), press down on the D-pad to put it away Cutter: Shoot off part of your face as a boomerang Cutter + Cutter: A stronger version of the ability above Section Six: Walkthrough Planet One: Pop Star Area 1: Fields and Rivers Shard 1: It's in plain sight hovering above the path Shard 2: In the river there is a black platform with three stars hovering above it. Use any kind of Bomb ability to break it and get the shard underneath it. Shard 3: Suck up the star Waddle Dee emits when he runs into either side of the area, or attack him with special abilities. Get the shard when finished. Area 2: More Fields and Rivers Shard 1: On the ride Waddle Dee gives you, towards the end, there will be a few stars beneath the platform. Beneath them is a shard. Shard 2: Defeat the Bouncy to get a second shard. Shard 3: Defeat Adeleine by destroying her paintings then either pressing down and the A button, using a special ability or flying and blowing air at her. Area 3: King Dedede's Castle Shard 1: You will need the Cutter + Cutter power-up at the bottom of the well to get to the shard. Shard 2: After Passing Adeleine, fly up above the door you come out of to find a shard. Shard 3: Defeat King Dedede. It's just like the ending of all the other games. Its not hard. Boss: Wispy Woods Any Kirby veteran will remember how to defeat him. Use the apples he throws at you. This time, though, you must hit the saplings and roots. For an ability I suggest either Bomb + Cutter or Stone + Needle, but any ranged attack will do. Planet Two: Rock Star Area 1: The Desert Shard 1: In the building with the eye blocks, fly above them to find the first shard between the second and third pillar. Shard 2: Defeat the Cactus. Shard 3: You will need the Stone + Spark combo. After exiting the sand-filled chamber (with help from my favorite non-Kirby character, Waddle Dee) head to the left. Use the combo on the Brown and Yellow striped door to reveal a shard. Area 2: Ancient Ruins Shard 1: In the ruins, climb over the top and go to the third floor on the right side. In the middle of the floor, a piece of floor should crumble and drop you onto the shard. Shard 2: In the room with the triangular steps (with the ghosts that drop things on you) a shard hovers just below the bottom step. Shard 3: As King Dedede, work your way to the left side of the chamber, then upward. Climb all the climby things to reach the sub-chamber with the shard. Area 3: The Fossil Caves Shard 1: You'll need some kind of stone ability. Above the first skeleton, there is one brown vertebrae. Break it and drop down to reach the shard at the left. Shard 2: In the room with two holes in the ground, fall down one. If you see a hill with the shard in the background, fly back up through the hole and drop down the other one. Defeat the enemy and drop down once again to reach the shard. Shard 3: In the vertical waterway with the falling skeletons, swim up, past the exit to reach the top of the chamber and the shard. Area 4: Area 51A Shard 1: Maneuver around the room with the retracting planks to the middle of the room, where the shard is found. Shard 2: You'll need the Bomb + Spark ability. See what Adeleine is painting in the dark room and, in the next room, press the corresponding colored buttons. Shard 3: Defeat the Eye thing. Boss: Pix You can only dodge the beams of light until you reach the top of the tower. Then you can hit the corresponding jewels with their color of double helix. For abilities I suggest Bomb + Bomb, Needle + Cutter and Needle + Spark. Planet Three: Aqua Star Area 1: One Day at the Beach... Shard 1: In the green sphere cave, jump into the first one and drop below the platform to find a shard. Shard 2: Defeat the spiky guy. Shard 3: You'll need the Ice + Bomb ability. Drop through the platforms near the guys on clouds, near a large column that separates two sides of platforms. Use the ability to break apart the checkered block on the bottom of the platforms, then drop onto the green sphere to reach the shard. Area 2: It's Autumn for Kirby Shard 1: Defeat the Large crab, but you must have the Burn + Stone ability to get the shard above its perch. Shard 2: While you are in the boat with Waddle Dee, a shard hovers out and above the second waterfall. Shard 3: After you lose the boat, the final shard is at the foot of the last waterfall. Area 3: The Torrents Shard 1: Drop into the first chamber and use my favorite ability (Bomb + Cutter) on the mound to the left of the chamber to uncover a shard, then remove the star block to move on. Shard 2: After defeating the cutter guy, stay to the right of the chamber to receive the shard (since a hole opens up on the left side). Shard 3: In the room with the pillar of water, use the Stone + Cutter combination to break through the wall, then stand on the 1Up platform and change to Rick the hamster (He's the one that doesn't curl into a ball after tapping the A button twice). Then press the D-pad towards the wall and tap the A button to climb to the Shard. Area 4: Use a Stone Ability for This Area Shard 1: Stay to the left of the chamber with the currents that push you left and right. The shard is in a pit at the top of the chamber. Shard 2: When you hit a pole in the area with the coral-like look, go to the bottom of the pole before letting go to get the shard. Shard 3: In the corridor where the rocks come at you from behind, stay to the bottom to find a shard in a pit. (Tip: If you use Spark + Cutter it will stop about 50% of the rocks from hitting you) Boss: Orca For part one of the battle, the Orca will simply spit an enemy at you, then swim around. Exhale whatever he throws at you back at him, until you defeat him the first time. For part two, you must quickly swim upward until you enter the area where there are enemies to either side of you. Exhale them at the Orca to get the Shard. For Abilities I suggest Bomb + Bomb and Stone + Needle. Planet Four: Neo Star Area 1: The Jungle Shard 1: After crossing the pond, there will be a series of stumps with pits between them. There is a shard in the pit between the second and third stumps. Shard 2: In the section with the vines on either side and the pterodactyls flying about, climb down from the starting point to find the second shard. Shard 3: In the area with the tree swings, hovering above the first of the circular stumps is the area's final shard. Area 2: The Mines Shard 1: After falling through the ceiling to begin the level, there is a shard on the right. Shard 2: On the Mine cart ride, make the third jump to land on the upper track, then tap the A button to land on top of the next obstacle and receive the shard. Shard 3: After a few waterfalls, you should come across a brown and black wall. Destroy it with the Stone + Bomb ability to get the final shard. Area 3: The Cliffs Shard 1: You need a needle power. You will come across an orange section of ground that can be destroyed with the right ability. Shard 2: Destroy the boxes to form the shape Adeleine painted. Here they are: _ _________ _____ _|_|_ |_|_|_|_|_| _|_|_|_|_ _|_|_|_|_ |_|_|_|_|_| _|_|_|_|_|_|_ _|_|_|_|_|_|_ |_|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|x|_|_|_| |_|_|x|_|_| |_|_|_|x|_|_|_| |_| |_|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_| |_| _|_|_|_|_|_|_ |_|_|_| |_| |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| |_|_| The boxes with X's are where the shard will appear. Shard 3: After climbing past all the alcoves filled with food, walk to the right edge of the plateau and fall down the crevasse to discover a shard. Area 4: The Volcano Shard 1: As King Dedede, destroy all the pillars that can be destroyed. A shard is hidden in the top part of one. Shard 2: In the short room with the guy with maracas and a small mound in the center, use some kind of ice ability on the mound. Shard 3: In the room with the rising lava, stay to the left to find a shard. Boss: Lava Guy In part I, attack the tentacles it sends after you. For Part II, you must attack Lava Guy itself. It really doesn't require much strategy, just spit whatever he sends after you right back. For Abilities I suggest Stone + Needle and Needle + Bomb, but I recommend strongly against either Burn or Burn + Burn. Planet Five: Shiver Star Area 1: Winter Wonderland Shard 1: While in the bobsled, jump onto the roof of the second igloo to find the first shard. Shard 2: After defeating the snowman, melt the shard's icy prison with any kind of Burn ability. Shard 3: In the final crack in the frozen lake, swim through the tunnel to find a shard at the very bottom corner. Area 2: The Clouds Shard 1: After the three 'up and down moving platforms' there is a hole in a cloud. Drop into it for a shard. Shard 2: In the 'room' with the green ball that rotates, a shard awaits when you fire yourself up and to the left. Shard 3: After defeating the cloud enemy, use the Spark + Needle ability to get to the shard. Area 3: Some Quick Shopping Shard 1: Directly across from the exit doors, there is a shard on an outcropping floor on the left. Shard 2: Defeat the hangy-down thing. Shard 3: After Adeleine paints the three fruits, push down the buttons corresponding to the fruits in any order in the next room. (See 'FAQ' for details) Area 4: The Factory Shard 1: Use the Stone + Needle on the brown crates with orange X's, then climb up to get the shard. Shard 2: After defeating the Phoenix (Self-Titled), use a Spark + Cutter ability to slice open the cage at the top of the room. Shard 3: In the room in which the burning walls follow you on a conveyor belt, a shard rests on the far right of one of the top levels. Boss: Rocket First, defeat his arms, then when it comes after you, aim for the back of its 'hull'. It is the simple swallow-and-spit scenario. I'd suggest anything with a range for an ability, but especially Spark + Stone, if you can control it well. Planet Six: Ripple Star Area 1: Doesn't This Seem Familiar? Shard 1: Hangs in plain sight above the path. Shard 2: Defeat the saw blade. Shard 3: Use Bomb + Needle in the final pond. Area 2: The Sewers of Ripple Star Shard 1: Use Needle + Spark in the bottom of the well. Shard 2: Head up and to the left in the underwater chamber with the stars, surrounded by holes with food. Shard 3: Use a cutter ability on the green pillar after Adeleine gives you invincibility. Area 3: The Palace Guards Shard 1: Defeat the first room full of enemies. Shard 2: In the third room of enemies, use Needle + Burn to destroy the floor, then defeat the enemies. Shard 3: Defeat the enemies in the fifth room. Boss: Magic Matter WHEW! This guy is tough. I mean really, reallllly tough. Until you get a hang of the fighting, anyway. First, you have to understand that as long as part of your current ability (or thing you are exhaling) is the one that the boss is using at the time, it will affect it (E.G. Burn + Spark will harm both Burn and Spark versions of Magic Matter, as will exhaling a Burn + Spark combo star). Second, understand that you can acquire powers from the remnants of its attacks. The best combinations I have found are: Burn + Needle, Ice alone, Stone + Spark and Bomb + Cutter. Best of luck to you. Planet Seven: Dark Star 2 Boss: 0 As I was thinking of ways to mock the name of the boss, the reasoning dawned on me: zero squared is nothing, much like Dark Matter according to the story line. Anyway, to defeat it, you must shoot its eye enough times that it becomes stunned (if you are in motion when you shoot, you will miss). Fly upwards until you can get a clear shot at its halo. After the halo is destroyed, fly downwards until you come across its tail. Fire liberally at it. After a few passes, it should fall. Enjoy the cinematic, then call up all your friends who own this game and brag about how you finished it all on your own (you read my FAQ\ Walkthrough yourself, right?). Section Seven: FAQ Q. Why would King Dedede join Kirby after the many defeats he has been handed? A. I believe he felt betrayed by Dark Matter after it had previously helped him and, subsequently, failed him then tried to take the shard from him, leading eventually to his possession. Q. Why does it seem like you actually analyze these plots to the point of acting like a psychiatrist? A. I assumed you would appreciate the humor in my answers. Q. What are those goofé (pronounced goo-fay) fruits that Adeleine paints in Shiver Star? A. So far, I have been able to name six (out of seven). A Melon = Green 1 Grape = Purple 2 Cherries = Red A Peach = Pink A Ham (?) = Brown Q. Speaking of those buttons, how do you push them down? A. Stand on them and press down on the D-pad. Q. How do you control the Boat \ Mine Cart \ Bobsled Waddle Dee puts you in? A. Press the A button to jump. Don't worry about the enemies, since they can't harm you. Q. What are those animals that Kirby becomes when you use the Stone + Cutter ability? A. Three are from Kirby 2, and the other three are toned-down versions of those three. Here's a list: Birds: Coo: An owl from Kirby 2, press the A button to flap his wings. Other Bird: Same, but can fly longer Fish: Kine: The fish from Kirby 2, he does not seem able to move though... Other Thing That I Can Only Assume is a Fish: Just jumps around Hamsters: Rick: Allowed Kirby to walk on ice in Kirby 2, he climbs walls if you hold down the D-Pad in the direction of the walls and tap the A button when he reaches the apex of his jump. Other Hamster: If you press the A button twice, it curls up into a ball and jumps a little higher. Section Eight: Secrets By finishing Level Six, you will unlock the sound test option. By finding every shard, you will unlock Level Seven. By defeating Dark Matter, you will unlock the Boss Battles Option. By winning against a computer player in MiniGame mode, you will unlock higher difficulty levels. Section Nine: MiniGames 100-Yard Hop Press the A button to hop 2 spaces and the B button to hop 1 space. You must jump over puddles and frogs in the first mode. The second difficulty adds Bananas, the third adds haystacks and the makes it like Frogger, in that you jump from one platform to another and there are turtles that can submerge and resurface at any given time. Bumper Crop Bump Move left and right with the D-pad and bump others as you move into them with the A button. Try to catch the falling fruit. The second difficulty level adds Bombs that erase your fruit count, and others make bombs more frequent. Extreme difficulty level makes it so that you must catch gems instead of fruits. Checkerboard Chase Move with the D-pad and cause the blocks in front of you to fall by pressing the A button. After a character falls five times, he \ she is out. The second difficulty changes the colors and speeds up the falling blocks' speeds, as do others. Extreme difficulty changes the background to that of a night sky. Section Ten: Polls I have decided to do something somewhat revolutionary: I'm offering readers of my FAQ\Walkthrough to vote in Kirby-related polls, where the results will be posted on the FAQ\Walkthrough whenever it is updated. To vote, send your answers (or suggestions for more polls) to willis5225@ign.com Poll 1: Who is your favorite non-Kirby character from any Kirby game? Results: Waddle Dee: 5 Rick the Hamster: 4 Adeleine: 2 Poll 2: What is your favorite Kirby game other than Kirby 64? Results: Kirby's Dreamland 2 (GB): 7 Kirby's Dreamland (GB): 5 Kirby's Pinball Land (GB): 1 Poll 3: What is your favorite ability in Kirby 64? Results: Spark + Cutter: 4 Bomb + Cutter: 4 Bomb + Bomb: 2 Section Eleven: Shameless Self Glorification I have better communication skills and sing better than you. I feel good about myself now.
