This is my longest guide to date, and hopefully my best, too. I expect that whoever uses this guide will read it carefully because it might use some sort of shorthand notation and reference to other sections within the guide. Enjoy the guide and use it only when you are stuck, otherwise it ruins some of the fun right? Enjoy. --Index---------------------------------------------------------------- I. Specials II. Thank you. _____________ I. / Specials / These are the special, most difficult moves that the skaters can pull off. In Tony Hawk's, you can pull them off once your specials bar is full, which is filled by performing other tricks and depleted by the passage of time and bails. They are great to perform because they get you loads of points. Each Skater has several specials, as you will see below. I don't know whether I will have mentioned all the specials but I completed my careers using only a single special. I have not included the grind specials because I find them unnecessary but I am aware of their existence and if you wish to use them they can be helpful. Tony Hawk -The 900 (right, down, 6 button) -360 flip to Mute (down, right, 4 button) -Kickflip McTwist (right, right, 6 button) Bob Burnquist -Backflip (up, down, 6 button) Kareem Campbell - Frontflip (down, up, 6 button) - Kickflip Underflip (left, right, 4 button) Rune Glifberg - Christ Air (left, right, 6 button) - Kickflip McTwist (Right, Right, 6 button) Bucky Lasek -Kickflip McTwist (right, right, 6 button) -Fingerflip Airwalk (left, right, 6 button) Chad Muska -Frontflip (down, up, 6 button) Andrew Reynolds -Backflip (up, down, 6 button) -Triple Kickflip (left, left, 4 button) Geoff Rowley -Backflip (up, down, 6 button) Elissa Steamer -Backflip (up, down, 6 button) Jamie Thomas -540 Flip (left, down, 4 button) -Frontflip (down, up, 6 button) ________________________ II. / High And Pro Scores / I decided to write a section apart to cover the "High score" and "Pro score" objectives. This allows you to refer to this section when you are having problems obtaining these scores, and it gives you a central reference point so I don't have to repeat things over and over again. There are a few points you must remember to obtain high scores: --(1)Nollie----------------------------------------------------------- Always nollie when you are doing a trick. It increases your score tremendously. Let me demonstrate: Backflip = 4000 points Nollie + Backflip = 8400 points This just goes to show how a single tap of a button can increase your score amazingly. The technique counts for all tricks, and combos: always nollie first! To nollie, simply tap up on the directional pad before releasing your ollie. --(2)Combos------------------------------------------------------------ Do combos whenever you can. I find a very effective combination to do a nollie, which you should always do, a grabtrick, a rotation, and then a fliptrick. Let me break it down for you: 540 (rotation) Nollie + Madonna (grabtrick) + Kickflip to Indy (fliptrick) = 6500 Points Another tip is that the fliptrick you use should not be a one-button combination (where you press only one button on the directional pad e.g. right), but rather a two-button combination (where you press two adjacent buttons on the directional pad e.g. down and left). Examples of one-button combinations fliptricks are kickflips, heelflips, 360 shove its and impossibles. Examples of two-button combination fliptricks, which you should preferably use, are Kickflips to Indy, Hardflips, Sex Changes and Switch 360 Flips. --(3)Gaps + Bonuses---------------------------------------------------- Gaps are easy multipliers, so they quickly increase your score. Find the gaps you want to use and perform your combos over them. I will mention some gaps in this guide, but if you want to easily find them they frequently occur: -Between kickers -Between kickers and rails -Between kickers and ramps -Over platforms Again, allow me to simply show you the efficiency of adding a gap to your trick: Kickflip to Indy = 600 points Kickflip to Indy + HP Transfer (gap) = 1550 points Of course the combo could be much bigger than this and get you many more points, but this example already goes to show how easily you can increase your combo score. Bonuses work in a very similar way to this, just look out for silver icons that are suspended in the air above ramps. Getting them adds to and multiplies your score quite similarly to gaps. They are usually above ramps, on high ledges and near kickers. --(4)Grinds------------------------------------------------------------ These are often overlooked. In the beginning I used to get very frustrated when I couldn't make the 2000 points that I needed for the Pro score in those last remaining seconds, but this is the answer. To most efficiently use these, combo them with different grinds, fliptricks, grabtricks and rotations, and preferably a nollie as well if you can get it in there. Boardslide + 360 Shove it + 50-50 grind + Boardslide + Kickflip to Indy = 6500 Points This may take some practice because it requires fast finger movements, but otherwise it should be very efficient. Remember to use one-button combination within the grind because those are fast enough to resume your grind, and at the end of the grind if the distance to the ground is sufficient, use grabtricks and two-button combination fliptricks to terminate the combo. --(5)Practice---------------------------------------------------------- Practice your specials and combos, and find gaps that you might use in completing your objectives. This will help you to perfect your maneuvers so that you can optimize your scores. Improvement comes with time so be patient and persistent, and you will eventually become much more proficient in obtaining high scores. --(6)Competition------------------------------------------------------- When you compete in competitions you must aim at three things: variety, style and difficulty. This basically means pulling various big tricks, combos and specials without bailing your skater. -Each of your runs must include at least a couple of fliptricks, grabtricks, grinds and a handplant or two. -Aim at getting as high a score as possible, as this will automatically force you to vary your tricks and pull of big, difficult combos. -Try specifically not to fall. -Spread the area over which you pull off your tricks, but concentrate the biggest tricks in one, well-suited area. _____________ III. / Glossary / In the main walkthrough I will be using some terms associated with skating or just as part of my notation which you should be familiarized with in order to fully comprehend this guide. These terms are explained in the following glossary. Quarterpipe = Literally a quarter of a pipe. It is like a box with a curved slope on its side. Halfpipe = Again, like a half of a pipe. It resembles two quarterpipes facing each other, so that the whole ensemble looks U-shaped. Kicker = Similar to a sloped box, used to launch the skater into the air. Combo = Combination of different moves linked together in one sequence i.e. without the skater interrupting the sequence by either falling of their skateboard or touching the ground. Fliptrick = any trick which involves the flipping of the skateboard in any direction, such as a Heelflip or Kickflip. Grabtrick = any trick which involves the grabbing of the skateboard primarily, such as a Madonna or Rocket Air. Grind = to slide the skateboard along a ledge or similar object, on any of its surfaces. Special = these are the special, most difficult moves that the skaters can pull off. In Tony Hawk's, you can pull them off once your specials bar is full, which is filled by performing other tricks and depleted by the passage of time and bails. Reference point: In this guide I will be using these points, whose location will be described, as a reference on which to base my descriptions. Level type: This refers to what you are expected to do in the level. For example, a level where you have to complete objectives will have level type "objectives" whilst a competition level will have designation "competition". Rail = A metal railing, similar to a metal pipe used primarily for grinding (at least in this game). Bailing = Falling off your skateboard. _______________________________________ IV. / Some notes on the reference system / In this guide I use reference points. In this guide I will be using these points, whose location will be described, as a reference on which to base my descriptions. I describe the location of the reference points which I'll be using at the beginning of each level. For example, at the beginning of the level Warehouse: Location: Woodland Hills Level Type: Objectives Reference points: -Halfpipe this is the only one of its kind in the level, found in the middle of the map. Under the heading 'Reference points' I have named and described all the reference points that I will be using in directing you throughout your objectives. Within the walkthrough, every time I want to refer to a reference point, I will write the name of that reference points with an asterisks (*) on either side. So if I say 'in the middle of the *halfpipe* there is a ...' you know what I am referring to. ________________ V. / Walkthrough / //// Location 1: Warehouse //////////////////////////////////////////// Location: Woodland Hills Level Type: Objectives Reference points: -Halfpipe this is the only one of its kind in the level, found in the middle of the map. If you jump over the halfpipe this is counted as a gap. For more help on obtaining these scores, go to the High and Pro Scores section. --Smash the boxes------------------------------------------------------ Do this by just riding into the boxes. 1) Directly to your right as you start the level. 2) On a small platform adjoining the *half-pipe*. 3) On top of the quarterpipe that lines the entire far wall. 4) On a platform near the metal rail which is located on the left side of the map as where you start. 5) As you start the level head down the slope and turn left immediately. For more help on obtaining these scores, go to the High and Pro Scores section. --Grind 5 Tables------------------------------------------------------- 1) Immediately to your left as you start the level. 2) Follow the passage ahead and turn left at the slope under the canopy ahead. At the foot of the slope there are some kickers. Turn left when you reach them to get to the next table. 3) From the last table follow it away from the canopy, keeping against the wall. You will come to a big ditch. Jump across to get to the table on the other side. 4) Follow the wall to the left of the last table and as soon as you come to a passage lined with quarterpipes, which is the *quarterpipe passage* as seen from the other side, turn right to find the next table. 5) Pass through *the quarterpipe passage* from this side to come to an open area with two pools in it. Next to the wall is a ledge with the letter on it. T) Above the quarterpipes in *the quarterpipe passage*. E) On rail in between two pools at the end of *the quarterpipe passage*. --Hidden Tape---------------------------------------------------------- 1) Jump off the roof, to the right as soon as you start the level. 2) Facing away from where you jumped, you should be able to see a slope heading up against the side of a building, which you should go up. 3) Once on the roof, turn around. In the distance, a bit past the open skylight is a large cubic structure. Use the kicker near it to jump up onto it. 4) In the corner of the top of the structure, near where you jumped up, there is a wooden bar which leads onto a blue, thin roof like the one you started on. Grind it onto that roof. 5) Follow the roof until the very end, jumping as it slopes upwards. This will allow you to catch air and grab the tape. //// Location 3: Mall ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Location: New York Level Type: Objectives Reference points: -The cave: A bit past the large pool of water in this level is a slope leading downwards. Also, to the right of the slope that leads down to the cave, there is a long narrow balcony with a car on it. Follow it to the end and if you jump down from here to the depths below it is counted as a gap. You can also use the kicker or ledge to try to grind on the lights in the air a bit away from this balcony to get a great combo score. For more help on obtaining these scores, go to the High and Pro Scores section. --Smash 5 Directories-------------------------------------------------- 1) At the bottom of the slopes you descend in the beginning of the level there is a slope straight ahead leading up, actually an escalator. Follow it up to get to the first directory. 2) Right in front of the slope a bit past the large pool of water, on its left side is another such escalator leading up. Go up this and turn around at the top to find the directory. 3) Past *the cave* is some water with a few bushes behind it. Behind these bushes is the next directory. 4) A bit along the level after the last directory is a narrow passage with a sculpture made out of arches in the middle of it. You can't miss it. The directory is in the middle of these arches. 5) Right near the end of the level. It practically blocks your path so it is pretty evident to find it. --Get S-K-A-T-E-------------------------------------------------------- S) On a rail near the bottom of the set of slopes on which you start off the level. K) A ledge on the right of the large pool of water in the level. A) On a rail above some water right of *the cave*. T) A bit along the level after the last letter is a narrow passage with a sculpture made out of arches in the middle of it. You can't miss it. The letter is on one of these arches. Objectives: -15000 Points -Break 5 Signs -Get S-K-A-T-E -Hidden Tape -40000 Points --15000 points/ 40000 points------------------------------------------- The best place here is either *the park* or if you turn right at the junction straight ahead it leads you to an area with several quarterpipes at the side of the road. Just pull some big combos on these ramps. There is also a gap, as you start the level jump the kicker ahead to the ledge against the wall on the right. --Break 5 Signs-------------------------------------------------------- 1) Once you start head straight ahead, keeping to the left of the road. You will soon see a slope leading down to the left, on which the sign is. 2) Across *the park* from the last sign is another slope leading up. The sign is at the top of this slope. 3) On top of a platform that is straight ahead, a bit left from the last sign if you face away from *the park*. It is lined by quarterpipes. 4) On the street straight ahead from the second sign, along the right side of the road. 5) Follow the street along from the last sign, and a short distance after the next bend you will see it at the right side of the road. --Get S-K-A-T-E-------------------------------------------------------- S) As you start, jump the kicker in front of you onto the ledge against the building on the right. Just continue grinding the entire length of the ledge and the rail you will come to. Once you reach the end of the rail, jump in order to snatch the letter. K) Above the fountain in *the park*. A) As you start, go straight and turn right at the junction. Follow the road around the next bend, and continue straight. Not much further ahead the letter floats above a quarterpipe on the left side of the road. T) There is a truck parked against the quarterpipe where you obtained the last letter. It has a ramp against its back. Ride up the ramp and use it to jump through the window behind the truck. Follow this corridor and you will reach a glass tunnel above the road you were on. The letter is in here. E) On the street, after the glass tunnel, is a kicker on the right of the road. Use it to jump onto the rail between two buildings on the right side of the road and grind it until you obtain the letter. --Hidden Tape---------------------------------------------------------- 1) As soon as you start, turn around. Use any of the kickers to jump to the street above. 2) Turn left down this street. At the end of this street there is a parked truck with a slope leading up it. Use this slope to jump through the window in the building the truck is parked against. 3) Follow the passage behind the window you just jumped through. Continue through the glass tunnel that you will come to and then up the slope onto the roof. 4) Go past the glass building to the left, and around its backside. You will find a slope that you should ride up. 5) As soon as you enter the enclosed area past the slope, look left. There is a gap in this side of the area. Note: Don't confuse this gap with another gap that is straight ahead as you enter this area. 6) Use the ramps in this area to gain speed, and then launch yourself through the gap mentioned above. If you catch enough air, you should be able to grab the tape which floats in the air. //// Location 6: Downhill Jam ///////////////////////////////////////// Location: Phoenix Level Type: Objectives Reference points: -The pipe: Just ride along the level, avoiding grinding on surfaces as this may deviate your course. Eventually you will come to a passage that is basically a long, slanted halfpipe. Objectives: -20000 Points -Open 5 Valves -Get S-K-A-T-E -Hidden Tape -40000 Points --20000 Points/ 40000 Points------------------------------------------- First of, once you start the level just continue and before you reach some huge kickers near the beginning, there are some rails over a huge ravine to the right. Grinding them all the way down is a gap. Also, if you jump the rightmost kicker at the right angle over the ravine, it is a gap. This gives you great points if you can nollie + special over it. Here is the proof: Nollie + Backflip + Huge Water Hazard Gap = 13800 Points Which is nearly half the required points in less than a tenth of the time. After that stunt, the best place to rack up scores here is *the pipe*. However, each time you land a combo or trick, you have to slightly angle your landing because the halfpipe is slanted and otherwise this will cause you to surely move towards the end of the halfpipe. --Open 5 Valves-------------------------------------------------------- 1) As you start, keep right and jump onto the tall metal rails ahead using the slope against the platform that they are set on. 2) If you follow the path from the last valve, you will come to three valves bordering a ravine. The second valve is on the middle kicker. 3) Just before *the pipe*, against the left mountainside is a slope leading up. Go up it and grind the rail at the top until you hit this next valve. 4) Ride further along the level. Soon you will come to a massive slope leading up. Keep in the middle. As you're going down the other side, head for the kicker in the middle at the foot of the slope. Jump it to get on top of a massive pillar ahead, where the fourth valve is. 5) Continue from the last valve and soon you will come to a concrete slope on the left of the passage leading down. Wallride the wall on the right of this slope, where the valve is. --Get S-K-A-T-E-------------------------------------------------------- S) A bit down the level as you start are three kickers. Jump the rightmost kicker to reach this letter. K) There is another yet kicker around the next bend. Use it to jump on top of some tall metal bars on top of which this letter is. A) On top of the right side of *the pipe* there is a platform. On this platform are some quarterpipes with the letter above them. T) Skate past the huge pillar on which you got one of the valves. Just past it, ignore the first little slope leading down but jump the second small slope just behind it to reach this letter. E) At the end of the passage where you got the last letter (where there is a slope leading down) ride up the quarterpipe to the right and jump onto the rail on a platform above. Grind the rail all the way to its end to get the letter. --Hidden Tape---------------------------------------------------------- 1) Just before *the pipe*, there is a slope leading up against the left mountainside, which you should ride up. 2) At the top of this slope is a rail. Jump onto it and grind it completely until you end up on a quite narrow platform. 3) Follow this platform to the left, basically following the trail of oil barrels. Right at the end of the platform is another rail. Grind it to the end, onto what seems like a dirt path. 4) Follow the dirt path. Gain speed and jump over the first gap in the path. Continue skating on. 5) A bit past the first gap it seems like the path ends. Just jump towards the mountainside underneath the green advertisement. You should jump up onto another, higher path, just in front of the advert. 6) Skate to the right past the advertisement, following this path. Soon the path will turn to concrete, but continue following it. There will be another gap in the path that you will have to jump over. 7) Continue following the path, and once it turns back to dirt, get ready to catch air. Make sure you are in the middle of the path as it slopes upwards, and then jump as it ends. 8) You should now be flying through the air towards a very tall platform. The tape, which is just above it, should be yours for the grabbing. However, if you are a bit of course, just use the rails on the platform to grind towards the tape. //// Location 7: Burnside ///////////////////////////////////////////// Location: Burnside Level Type: Competition Criteria: -Three heats per skater -Best two heats count -Runs judged on style, variety and difficulty -Falling Loses points -Bronze, Silver and Gold medals awarded In this level, there is basically no specific location to skate. The whole place is a beautiful complex of possibilities, everywhere you turn. Just avoid the circular bowl. It is hazardous because it is so easy to bail in the pool and the other areas are just as good to pull off your combos. However, the rectangular bowl is completely safe and jumping out of it also counts as a gap, which is a nice multiplier. Just keep pulling off some nice combos. Mine went something like this: 50-50 Grind + 360 Shove it = 960 Points (for pulling off a grind) Nollie + Rocket air = 3360 Points (just for filling up special) Nollie + Backflip = 8300 Points (grabtrick) Switch Nollie + Backflip = 6300 Points (grabtrick) Nollie + Backflip = 4200 Points (grabtrick) 540 Nollie + Madonna + Kickflip to Indy = 6500 Points (grabtrick + fliptrick) 540 Nollie + Madonna + Kickflip to Indy = 4200 Points (grabtrick + fliptrick) Nollie + Rocket air + Heelflip = 1500 (for variety) 540 Nollie + Madonna + Kickflip to Indy = 2192 Points (grabtrick + fliptrick) Also, I had NO bails. Although my run wasn't even finished here (I still had 17 seconds left), I just ended the run and got a score of 93.5. This just demonstrates how easy it is to get a gold in this level. For more help on getting gold in this competition, look up the High Score/ Pro Score section or look up the competition article in the High and Pro Scores section. //// Location 8: Streets ////////////////////////////////////////////// Location: San Francisco Level Type: Objectives Reference points: -The ramp: Ride straight ahead and down this first slope. Turn Left and continue, and soon you will see a short row of quarterpipes not far from the road. They face a wall with a concrete quarterpipe against it so the ensemble is basically a halfpipe. Objectives: -25000 Points -Wreck 5 Cop Cars -Get S-K-A-T-E -Hidden Tape -50000 Points --25000 Points/ 50000 Points------------------------------------------- Just skate on the ramp and pull off combos. You will have to use absolutely every trick to keep getting points, because each time you pull off a trick it devalues. First pull all your specials + nollie, at the end of which you should have some 20000 Points - 30000 Points. Then pull of your nollie + grabtrick + fliptrick combos (refer to High and Pro scores section) and if this is not sufficient switch to some grinds. Above the concrete quarterpipe which is part of *the ramp* there is a bonus so if you can pull of a nollie, a special and get the bonus all at the same time, you can rack up an easy 13800 points. --Wreck 5 Cop Cars----------------------------------------------------- 1) Right behind you as you start 2) Follow the passage and go down the slope ahead. Turn right immediately at the bottom of the slope. A bit ahead is the cop car. 3) From the last car, follow the road ahead. At the junction turn right to find two cop cars parked at the left side of the road. 4) From the last car, follow the road ahead. At the junction turn right to find two cop cars parked at the left side of the road. 5) Turn around and follow the road straight past the junction where you came from. Simply follow the right side of the road a relatively long distance around several bends to find the cop car parked alongside the right of the road. --Get S-K-A-T-E-------------------------------------------------------- S) As you start stick close to the right wall and go up the narrow slope against this wall. Follow it onto a balcony sort of structure, around the next corner and just down against the building. Turn right (in fact the only possible direction) at the bottom to enter under some kind of shelter where the letter is. K) Jump onto the road and head left to *the ramp*. Head through the ramp and stick close to the left wall, which will take you up a few small slopes. The letter is at the top. A) Head back through *the ramp* and continue straight along the road. Turn right at the far junction where the street intersects another, and follow this road, past the small junction you come to into an oriental looking dead-end street/alley. Jump the quarterpipes in the back of this alley to reach the letter. T) Turn around and follow the street until just some distance before it bends. Notice on the right side of the road a concrete ramp surrounded by two slopes on either side (and some vegetation I believe). Launch yourself off the left slope through the window above to grab the letter. E) Follow through the bend at which you used the slope to jump into the window. Not much after the bend notice a classic building on the right side of the road. It has a very large window on its front and a slope leading partially up to it, looking rather like a beautiful staircase (Hawk style!). Use the quarterpipe on the opposite side of the road to gain speed and use the slope/staircase to launch yourself through the glass front of the building. Inside is the letter. Use the single pool in here to grab the letter. --Hidden Tape---------------------------------------------------------- 1) Skate down the big slope a bit up ahead as you start the level, and follow the street you come at to the left. 2) You practically immediately get to a bend in the road. Follow the road through the bend. Once you start nearing the next bend, notice the big rectangular sculpture to the right of the road. Skate to its end, which faces the bend. 3) Notice the lowered middle section in this side of the sculpture. Get some speed and jump up onto it. 4) Follow the narrow path in the middle section of the sculpture that you just jumped onto. Near the end of the sculpture as the path slopes upward, jump to cross the gap to the balcony of the building in front of you. 5) Follow the balcony straight across from where you jumped. Skate around the left corner that you will come to. 6) On this straight piece of balcony, gain a lot of speed, and once the balcony comes to an end, jump the gap to the balcony of the next building. 7) Follow the balcony on the same side of this building as the one you just jumped from. Stick closely to the wall, and ride up the small slope that you will come to. 8) Turn left immediately once up this slope. Go up the big slope ahead of you and turn right at the top. Continue along this short balcony, and then turn right again when it seemingly stops to come to another slope. Ride up it to the top. 9) Turn around once you are at the top of the slope. You are now on top of the building. Head up the huge slope on this roof, making sure that you stay nicely in the middle. Once you are at the top, skate down the huge downhill in front of you. 10) At the bottom of the downhill, where it starts to slope upwards, jump to catch air. Once in the air, try to crash through the glass dome below you. The secret tape floats just above it. Well, now you certainly have all the tapes! Officer Dick has arrived! //// Location 9: Roswell ////////////////////////////////////////////// Location: New Mexico Level Type: Competition Criteria: -Three heats per skater -Best two heats count -Runs judged on style, variety and difficulty -Falling Loses points -Bronze, Silver and Gold medals awarded This is by far the hardest competition, although it's still very possible to pull off after a few tries. Okay, let's break it down for you. In this level there are ramps all around you. Let me give you some hints: -Once you start look to the right, There is a lower section in the sequence of halfpipes. If you can jump this section it counts as a gap. Doing specials over this gives you huge scores, for example: Nollie + Backflip + Low Deck Gap = 13800 Points Not bad to start with. To win Gold on this level, use the first and longest part of the minute to pull your big combos, and in the last 15 seconds or so pull off a few BIG grinds which are quite easy here. Such a grind would go: Nosegrind + Impossible + Boardslide + 180 Kickflip to Indy = 6437 Points You can do two or so of these in those last seconds. My advice is pull your specials over the low deck gap, pull you combos anywhere on ramps and then near the end the big grinds. I found that if you include all this variation and have 50,000 points at the end of the minute, with no bails of course, then it's in the bag. My competition results were as follows: Heat 1: Score of 50000, including variation and no bails = 94.9 Judge score Heat 2: Score of 48000, including variation and no bails = 94.3 Judge score I just ended the competition there because I was assured of my Gold medal. Just expect the nearest competition to get scores of about 91- 92. If you are above that zone then you're safe. Got gold? Congratulations! You have just achieved total completion of this game (and me of my walkthrough)! Get off your couch and go tear up the ramps! You'll get this sentence once you ACTUALLY complete this game. What are you doing skipping until here? Tsk. Oh you actually completed the game?
