The guide has been changed slightly, along with a few slight changes to the point listings. The special thanks section has been updated. And the copyright information section has also been updated to include more information. New to this version is the FAQ section, which gives questions and answers for most parts of the game. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 1.0 - March 24th, 2000 --------------------------------------------------------------------- First version, so everything is nice and new! --------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTENTS 1. Copyright Information ===================================================================== 1. Introduction ===================================================================== Welcome to my Kings Quest 1 FAQ! The purpose of this FAQ is to help you through this old, but still great adventure game. This guide is split into nine different sections: - The Introduction: The beginning of the FAQ. Known as the part where FAQ authors always find it difficult to say something interesting. - My Review: Basically a description of the game. No hints or tips are given away here. - The Guide: A short, but detailed guide on how to get all 202 points in the game. The guide is very basic, but was intended to be that way as it's easier to read and follow. - Point Listing: Just a list on what parts of the game give you points. - Frequently Asked Questions: The main part of this FAQ. It covers most questions that people would ask about the game. - Cheats: Just a few basic cheats for the game. - Special Thanks: The section where people who have helped in some way or another with this FAQ are thanked. - Conclusion: The end of the FAQ. Known as yet another part where FAQ authors always find it difficult to say something interesting. - Copyright Information: The small, yet important section on copyright information. Read this if you have any questions about the copyright of my FAQ. And that's about all there is to this Kings Quest 1 FAQ. I hope my FAQ helps you with this game. ===================================================================== 2. My Review ===================================================================== Who hasn't heard of adventure games? Whether it's the really old ones, such as Zork, or the new ones, such as Grim Fandango. These are all classed as adventure games. Zork, was, and still is a classic. It was made in the early 1980's I believe, and some people still know what it is even today! What made the game so special was the fact that you were in control of the character. You chose whether to go north or south, east or west, whether to look under the rug, or to kick the cat out the window, and the fact that you had so much control over the game was what made it such a classic. So naturally, a game such as Zork spawned a whole new genre of games. The genre was called 'adventure games', something hardly anyone had heard about in the early 1980's, but which most people have heard about today. One of these adventure games, which was made around 1983 by Sierra on-line, was called: Kings Quest 1. Graphics - 9/10 Use your imagination: It's 1983, and a stunning new game is out with gorgeous 16-colour graphics. The first area at the beginning of the game is a castle scene. A moat is near the bottom of the screen, with a brown bridge on either side of it. Fully animated crocodiles are swimming around in the moat. A tree, drawn with two different shades of green, is in one part of this area. Animated flags stand proud on top of the grey castle, and the background is a sky drawn of two shades of blue. The character that you play in the game: Sir Graham, must have at least eight different colours on him, and over five frames of animation as he walks. As you walk around the various areas of this game, beautifully drawn characters will appear. A fairy for example, will show up, drawn in at least three different shades of pink. There are enemies too, such as the wolf, the elf or the magician, each having their own different colors and frames of animation. (You can stop imagining now...) Of course, it is not 1983 anymore, and naturally the graphics for this date look very outdated. For this reason, people may be put off the game when they first see them. However, if you can imagine yourself back in 1983, when graphics of this quality were outstanding, then you may even start to enjoy them. Sounds - 6/10 Nope, no speakers in 1983. The only sounds that were available from games in those days were straight from the PCs internal speaker. Back in 1983, if you added a 'beep' here, and a 'boop' there, then you actually come up with something that resembles music. The sound is very loud however, and can get annoying after a while. Thankfully, there is a way to turn the sound off. By simply pressing F2, the sound will be turned off. Actually, once you know about this function key, you might even leave the sound on so you can hear what people actually had to put up with. Gameplay - 8/10 At the time this game was released, the mouse was non-existent. Everything was accomplished by using the keyboard. For this reason, adventure games were a lot harder. You actually have to type things in, which can make for a more challenging, and more fun game. However, this kind of game can be extremely annoying because it does not understand certain words. For example, 'look tree' will be understood, but 'look at the tree' will not. As you make your way around the land of Daventry, you will see all manner of objects and characters with which you can interact. The game is non-linear, meaning that you don't have to follow a strict and certain path. And another aspect of what makes the game so good is trying to find all the points (158 is the most you can get). When you complete the game for the first time, it's unlikely that you will find all the points, as there are many ways to complete this game. This game has great gameplay as there is just so much to do! Lastability - 7/10 This just seems to be such a small adventure game, which is a shame because it must have had great sound and graphics in 1983. The quest just seems to be over very quickly. However, there is a score function. Whenever you accomplish a certain important task in the game, you will get points added to your overall score. There are 158 points to find in total, and finding every single one is very difficult. For this reason, it's likely that your score isn't going to be 158/158 straight away, so you'll probably want to go back and try and find things that will get you more points. By the 2nd game, you might have maximum points. By the 3rd game, you'll have probably found out that there's still a lot more to do in the game besides getting maximum points. By the 4th game, you might have found just about everything. And from then on, you'll probably just play the game for the fun of it! Overall - 8/10 A good game, but it just seems to take itself just a bit too seriously. It also seems a bit empty. There are just too many screens where there is absolutely nothing at all to do. Maybe the creators of this game could have added a few more objects or things to look at in these empty looking screens. Aside from these small problems, Kings Quest 1 is a great game. Don't let the graphics put you off. Kings Quest 1 still is a great game, even by today's standards. ===================================================================== 3.
