STATS ===================================================================== Stats are 6 features that determine the overall strength of a Pokémon. They are: *HP* HP stands for Health Points. This stat represents the life energy of the Pokémon. The higher its value, the higher the amount of punishment the Pokémon can receive before fainting. If HP drops to zero, the Pokémon faints and is unable to fight until it is healed. The species with the highest HP is Blissey. *ATTACK* This stat determines the damage a Pokémon can inflict when using physical attacks. Attacks of the following types are considered *physical*: Normal Fighting Poison Ground Rock Bug Flying Ghost Steel The higher the Attack value, the greater the damage caused by attacks of these types. The species with the highest Attack are Dragonite and Tyranitar. *DEFENSE* This stat determines the Pokémon's resistance against physical attacks. The greater its value, the lesser the damage received from these attacks. The species with the highest Defense is Shuckle. *SPEED* Although apparently insignificant, this stat is actually very important in battle. A speedy Pokémon has more chances to get initiative in battle, thus aquiring an advantage that may turn out to be crucial. The species with the highest Speed is Electrode. *SPECIAL ATTACK* This stat determines the damage a Pokémon can inflict when using special attacks. Attacks of the following types are considered *special*: Psychic Water Fire Ice Grass Electric Dragon Dark The higher the Special Attack value, the greater the damage caused by attacks of these types. The species with the highest Special Attack is Mewtwo. *SPECIAL DEFENSE* This stat determines the Pokémon's resistance against special attacks. The greater its value, the lesser the damage received from these attacks. The species with the highest Special Defense is Shuckle. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Each Pokémon species has *base stats*. These are the average values given to a wild Pokémon's stats at level 50. Base stats express quite exactly the Pokémon's potential - the greater they are, the greater the max possible value for each stat at level 100 will be. Pokémon of the same species all have the same base stats, so for example, all Chansey have a base HP of 250, regardless of their level. Base stats can reach a max of 255. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Although all Pokémon of the same species have the same base stats, each one of them has unique stats. If - for instance - you catch three level 20 Pikachu, you'll notice their stats are different. This is due to the fact that each one of them has, for each one of his stats, a *diversification value (DV)* that is different from the ones the others have. More simply, each one of them has unique "genes" that determine its stats' values. The DV is a number between 0 and 15 and is calculated when you catch a Pokémon in the wild. If a Pokémon has a DV of 15 for one of his stats, it will be able to reach the max value its species can reach for that stat. Example: if you catch a Chansey with an HP DV of 15, at level 100 it will be able to reach a max of 703 HP, the max possible value a Chansey can reach. But, if you catch a Chansey with an HP DV of 0, at level 100 that Chansey will only be able to reach a max of 673 HP. One Pokémon may not have the same DV for all of its stats, with the exception of Special Attack and Special Defense, which have the same DV as they were united in the Special stat in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. The odds of catching a Pokémon with a DV of 15 for all of its stats are 1 in 1048576, therefore it is almost impossible to catch a perfect one. So you've got to choose which stat you want to enhance the most, and catch many Pokémon of the same species until you find one with a high DV for that stat. When you look at a Pokémon's stats, you'll only be shown whole numbers, not decimals, so you can easily miscalculate the DVs. It is therefore advisable to catch Pokémon at the highest possible level. At level 50 and above, decimals are no more considered (almost), so it is easier to calculate DVs, while it is almost impossible to calculate them exactly at lower levels. Example: a level 2 Rattata has a minimum Attack of 7 and a max Attack of 8. However, that small number contains 16 different DVs that cannot be extimated because you're not shown decimals. So, a level 2 Rattata with an Attack of 8 may not have an Attack DV of 15. That's why you want to catch a Pokémon at the highest possible level if you want to be sure you have a powerful one, because at high levels DVs can be easily calculated. However, you must also consider that at higher levels, a Pokémon may no more have some useful moves it would have at lower levels. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ With the following formulae you can calculate the max value of the stats of a wild Pokémon at a certain level. The first formula can be used to calculate the values of Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack and Special Defense, while the second formula is used to calculate HP: WILD STATS FORMULA +----------------------------------------+ | f(stat) = (level x(base stat+DV):50)+5 | +----------------------------------------+ WILD HP FORMULA +----------------------------------------+ | f(HP) = (level x(base HP+DV+50):50)+10 | +----------------------------------------+ As you can see, here's where base stats play their main role. With these two formulae you can determine the DV of a stat and understand the true potential of the Pokémon you've caught. Remember, it's easier to determine DVs if the Pokémon's level is equal to or greater than 50 - at lower levels, decimals can seriously deceive you. IMPORTANT: these formulae apply to Pokémon that you caught in the wild and that have never fought a single battle. Why? Keep reading to know. ===================================================================== 4. EXPERIENCE ===================================================================== As you know, when a Pokémon takes part in a battle and doesn't faint, it receives *experience points (Exp)*. When a Pokémon gains enough Exp, its level raises by one. The max amount of Exp a Pokémon can achieve at level 100 determines the Pokémon's growth type. If you possess the Exp Share, two things can happen: 1 - The Pokémon holding the Exp Share does not fight. That Pokémon gets half the Exp gained from the battle, while the remaining half is divided between the Pokémon that did fight; 2 - The Pokémon holding the Exp Share fights. That Pokémon gets 2/3 of the Exp gained from the battle, while the remaining points are divided between the other fighters. If a Pokémon does not take part in the battle, it doesn't receive any Exp. If you fight a Trainer, you gain 1.5 times the normal Exp, rounded down. The same thing happens if you use a Pokémon obtained through a trade. This Pokémon's ID number is different from that of the Pokémon you catch in the wild. However, in this case ONLY that Pokémon will get more Exp then usual. Each stat can reach a max of 65025 points of Stat Exp, and this applies to ALL Pokémon. How do you know how much Stat Exp you gained from a battle? Actually, it is quite easy. When you defeat a Pokémon, your Pokémon gets an amount of Stat Exp that is equal to the opponent's Base Stats. As you know, Base Stats do not depend on the level, but only on the species. So, if you defeat a wild Chansey, you'll get 250 HP points, 5 Attack points, 5 Defense points, 50 Speed points, 35 Special Attack points, and 105 Special Defense points, regardless of the level. Like regular Exp, Stat Exp is equally divided between all fighters. Another way to gain Stat Exp is to use 5 items that I use to call *vitamins*. These are HP UP, Protein (Attack), Iron (Defense), Carbos (Speed), and Calcium (Special). Each one of them is worth 2550 points of Stat Exp for a stat. However, their use is limited by some rules. First of all, a Pokémon can be fed a maximum of 10 vitamins of each type, for a max of 25500 points of Stat Exp for each stat. Furthermore, the amount of vitamins a Pokémon can be fed is limited by the amount of Stat Exp it already has. Let's say your Pokémon already has 5100 (2550x2) HP points - that Pokémon can only be fed 8 HP UPs. If your Pokémon already has 25500 Stat Exp points or more for a stat, it can't be fed any vitamins for that stat. When you use a vitamin, the stat's value is immediately recalculated (see below). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The following formula is used to determine how much Stat Exp you have to get to gain a certain number of Stat points: +-------------------------------------------+ | f(SE) = 64x(50xSP:lv)^2 - 16x(50xSP:lv)+2 | +-------------------------------------------+ SP is the number of Stat points you want to get. At level 50, the max amount of Stat points you can get is 31. At level 100, the max amount of Stat points you can get is 63. Knowing this, we can work out the formulae used to determine the stats' max values at level 100. If you put in a DV of 15, you can determine the max value the stat can reach. For example, if you put in DV=15, you can find out that Mewtwo's Special Attack can reach as far as 406. +-------------------------------------------------+ | f(HP) = (level x(base HP+DV+50+31.99999):50)+10 | +-------------------------------------------------+ This one must be rounded down, too. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ A very important thing to understand is that the stats' values are recalculated every time your Pokémon gains a level, according to the amount of Stat Exp accumulated for each stat. However, being level 100 the highest achievable level, your Pokémon's stats can no more be recalculated after that point, even if they haven't reached 65025 Stat Exp points yet. So what to do if your Pokémon's stats didn't reach the max value their DVs allow them to reach? When this happens, your only hope is to use the so-called *Box Trick*. Every time you store a Pokémon in a box in Bill's PC, its stats are recalculated according to their amount of Stat Exp. So, it is still possible to reach the max amount of Stat points allowed by the DV, even at level 100. All you have to do is to fight a number of battles with the Pokémon, put it in a Box, and get it back. Have a look at its stats and you'll notice it gained some points. Repeat until the stats have reached the maximum value allowed by their DVs. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ One last thing - because stat points also depend on the level, if a Pokémon gains levels without fighting, its stats will eventually raise no matter what. However, the increase will be very little compared to that of a Pokémon which took part in many battles. So if you give a Pokémon a Rare Candy, or if you leave it at the Day Care on Route 34, it will gain regular Exp, but no Stat Exp, therefore ending up to be weaker than a Pokémon of the same level which fought many enemies. That's why wild Pokémon are weaker than trained Pokémon of the same level. Anyway, the Box Trick allows every Pokémon to reach its full potential, so it isn't true that Pokémon caught at higher levels are weaker - thay'll just have less Stat Exp by the time they reach level 100. If the Box Trick didn't exist, it would be wiser to catch Pokémon at the lowest possible level, but it does exist and works very well, so there's no reason to catch, say, a level 20 Rhyhorn rather than a level 52 Rhydon, unless you want a powerful low-level Pokémon for Pokémon Stadium, or you want some moves that a high-level Pokémon no more has and you want it to have. ===================================================================== 5. BATTLE ===================================================================== Each Pokémon can have one or two types. In the first case, it's called a *single type*, while in the second, it's called a *dual type*. The Pokémon's type has an influence on its attack power and on the damage received from enemy attacks. If a Pokémon uses an attack that matches its type (for a single type) or one of its types (for a dual type), it can take advantage of the *STAB (same-type attack bonus)*, which makes the attack 1.5 times more powerful than usual. When a Pokémon is hit by an attack, 4 different things can happen: 1 - The attack has no peculiar effects 2 - The attack is super effective 3 - The attack is not very effective 4 - The attack has no effect In the first case, the hit Pokémon didn't have any resistances nor weaknesses towards the attack type, and the damage is calculated normally, and STAB is applied if necessary. In the second case, the hit Pokémon receives double damage. If STAB is applied, the attack inflicts 3 times the regular damage. In the third case, the hit Pokémon receives 50% the regular damage. If STAB is applied, the attack inflicts 3/4 the regular damage. In the fourth case, the attack deals no damage at all. If the hit Pokémon is a dual type, both types must be considered when calculating the damage. Example: if a Gyarados (Water/Flying) is hit by an Electric attack, it receives 4 times the normal damage. If STAB is applied, the damage is equal to 6 times the regular damage. On the contrary, if a Gyarados is hit by a Grass attack, its Water part receives double damage, but its Flying part receives half damage. The final damage is therefore equal to the regular damage, or 1.5 times the regular damage if STAB is applied. If a Beedrill (Bug/Poison) is hit by a Grass attack, it receives 1/4 the normal damage, because both Bug and Poison are resistant to Grass. If STAB is applied, the damage is 3/8 the regular damage. Such attacks are considered *typeless*. Although they have a type, they can be used with the same effectiveness by all Pokémon, for various reasons (for example, Dragon Rage deals a fixed damage, so no one can use it more effectively than another). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Every attack has a base attack power, so it is possible to tell which attack is the most powerful for each type. Furthermore, every attack has an accuracy value, whose maximum is 99.6% (such an accuracy guarantees the attack will hit, unless certain attacks have been used (see below)). On the base of base power and accuracy, it is possible to determine the average power of the attack. The average power is what really determines which attack is the best for each type. For example, Thunder's base power is greater than Thunderbolt's (120 and 95 respectively), but Thunderbolt's accuracy is much greater, so its average damage will be higher, making Thunderbolt the best all-around Electric attack in the game. Anyway, when you want your Pokémon to learn an attack, keep in mind that attack's pros and cons: for example, Petal Dance is a very powerful Grass attack, but it may turn out to be more dangerous to your own Pokémon than to your opponent. Choose wisely the attacks you want your Pokémon to learn. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ There are some attacks, such as Wrap and Bind, that will hit the victim more than once, in consecutive turns (no less than 2). The victim will lose 1/16 of its max HP every turn. Also, these attacks do not allow the victim to be switched until their effect has worn off, which will happen after no more than 5 turns. Rapid Spin allows a Pokémon to free itself from such attacks. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ There are three attacks called *instant KO attacks*: they are Fissure, Guillotine, and Horn Drill. If one of these attacks connects, the victim will be KO'd regardless of its HP. If the attacker's level is greater than the defender's, the accuracy of these attacks is increased by ([attacker's level-defender's level]:256)% However, if the attacker's level is lower than the defender's, these attacks will always miss. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ An attack will sometimes score a *critical hit*. Such a hit inflicts double damage (the attacker's level is doubled in the Damage Formula), regardless of previous use of stats modifiers. This means that attacks such as Swords' Dance or Reflect will not affect the damage inflicted by a critical hit. The chance of a critical hit to happen is based on an n value and on a random number between 0 and 255. n can assume 5 values, from 0 to 4, each one corresponding to a number. If the random number is lower than n, the attack will score a critical hit. PP can vary from a min of 1 to a max of 40; usually, the more powerful the attack, the lower the PP number. There's an item called PP-UP, which can raise the max amount of PP for a move. Every time you use a PP-UP, the PP increase by 20% their initial max value, and up to 3 can be used for a move, raising PP to a max of 160% their initial value. The effect of PP-UPs is permanent. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Some attacks can alter the victim's stats, and are therefore called *stat modifiers*. They can alter all stats with the exception of HP, plus Accuracy and Evasion. Such attacks can be used no more than 6 times on a single target, and their effect wears off if the victim is switched. It will also wear off at the end of the battle. Sometimes a stat alteration may be a side effect of an attack. For example, Psychic can sometimes lower the victim's Special Defense. Stat modifiers that can be used up to 6 times (such as Growl) alter the stat by one level, while those that can be used up to 3 times (such as Swords' Dance) alter the stat by 2 levels. Belly Drum is a unique attack that can raise Attack by ten levels, thus raising it from -4 to 6 with a single use. Anyway, a stat can reach as high as 4 times its value, and as low as 1/4 its value. As for Accuracy and Evasion, this chart shows, left to right and from max to min, all possible levels for Accuracy. Status ailments can be divided into *temporary* and *permanent*. Permanent ailments will not wear off at the end of the battle, can't be erased by switching the victim, and can't be cumulated (a Pokémon can not have more than one at a time). Temporary ailments can be cumulated, wear off when the victim is switched, and also wear off at the end of the battle. Permanent status ailments are: PARALYSIS A paralyzed Pokémon's Speed drops to 1/4 of its value. Furthermore, it has a 25% chance of being totally paralyzed and being unable to attack. A patalyzed Pokémon has a hard time fleeing from a battle. POISON A poisoned pokémon loses 1/8 of its max HP every turn. Out of battle, it loses 1 HP every 5 steps you take. Pokémon of the Poison type are immune to this status ailment. BURN A burned Pokémon's Attack is reduced by 1/2. Such a Pokémon also loses 1/8 of its max HP every turn; however, it does not lose HP outside battle. SLEEP A sleeping Pokémon can not attack until it wakes up. Sleep can last from 1 to 7 turns, and the Pokémon can attack during the turn it wakes up. If you use any command other than FIGHT, the turn during which you used the command is not counted as a sleep turn. If you switch a sleeping Pokémon, the sleep turns count will restart when the Pokémon is used again. A sleeping Pokémon has a very hard time fleeing from a battle. FREEZING A frozen Pokémon can not fight. However, if a frozen Pokémon is hit by a Fire attack, it will be thawed out. Furthermore, a frozen Pokémon can thaw itself out using Flame Wheel or Sacred Fire, and if Sunny Day has been used, there's a 9.8% chance it will thaw out the frozen Pokémon. A Pokémon can attack the turn it is thawed out. FAINTING A fainted Pokémon can not take place in a battle. Temporary status ailments are: LEECH SEED A seeded Pokémon loses 1/8 of its max HP every turn, and its opponent absorbs this damage. A seeded Pokémon can free itself from Leech Seed using Rapid Spin. Grass-type Pokémon are immune to this status ailment. SEVERE POISON Toxic is the only attack that can inflict this ailment. On the turn following the use of Toxic, the victim loses 1/16 of its max HP. For every following turn, this damage increases by 1/16, so on the sixteenth turn the victim would lose an amount of HP equal to its max HP, but, if it isn't cured, it will faint on the seventh turn, regardless of its HP. A severely poisoned Pokémon can not be inflicted permanent status ailments. If it is switched, or it is still alive at the end of the battle, severe poison turns into regular poison. Poison-type Pokémon are immune to this status ailment. FLINCHING If a Pokémon flinches, it cannot use the attack it was commanded to use. To make its opponent flinch a Pokémon must attack first. CONFUSION A confused Pokémon has a 50% chance of attacking itself. An auto- inflicted attack is physical, has a base power of 40, is not influenced by Reflect, always deals the same damage, is considered typeless, and never scores a critical hit. Confusion can last up to 4 turns, including that on which the Pokémon returns to normal condition. There's still one more case, which cannot be considered a true status ailment: unruliness. This can only be applied to Pokémon obtained through a trade, and there's a 75% chance they will be unruly and won't execute the attack you commanded them to use, unless you have a Badge that allows you to control them. At the beginning of the game, a Pokémon got through a trade and at level 10 or higher will be unruly. When you get the Hive Badge, you'll be able to control all Pokémon up to level 30, and so on with the other Badges. Anyway, this status ONLY applies to Pokémon whose ID is different from that of your own Pokémon - Pokémon you caught by yourself will always obey you, no matter what. ===================================================================== 7. The substitute will absorb damage from the opponent's attacks, even in the turn it is destroyed. The substitute has the same stats as its creator's. All stats alterations the user may have are mantained by the substitute, but not those which happen after the substitute has been created. Furthermore, the substitute doesn't mantain its creator's status ailments, and it is immune to them. However, the creator can still be hit by Leech Seed and Disable, and can be burned, too. Recoil from moves such as Take Down is also not absorbed by the substitute. Haze affects the Pokémon, but not the substitute. The substitute can't protect from self-inflicted attacks, or from confusion if this is a consequence of the use of Trash, Petal Dance, or Outrage. Rest can nullify the poison, but if the victim is subsequently affected by a status ailment that deals damage every turn (Poison, burning, Leech Seed), the damage inflicted by such ailment will be cumulative as that of Toxic. Toxic is not influenced by stats modifiers. If a severely poisoned Pokémon is switched, severe poison will turn into normal poison. This will also happen if the Pokémon survives the battle. The transformed Pokémon will have the same attacks and stats as its opponent, except for HP. However, its level will remain the same. This effect lasts until the end of the battle, or until the transformed Pokémon is switched. Transform also copies the effect of stat modifiers the opponent may have used on itself. However, if the transforming Pokémon had stat alterations, Transform will nullify their effect. Status ailments are not copied, but Speed or Attack alterations due to Paralysis or Burning will be mantained. Each copied attack has 5 PP. Subsequent uses of Transform are impossible because this move is no more available after it has been used. --------------------------------------------------------------------- TRASH (Normal) Inflicts damage. EVOLUTION ===================================================================== Here you'll find all the ways a Pokémon can evolve. -Level up: some Pokémon evolve when they reach a certain level. It's the most common way a Pokémon can evolve. The three starters are an example of this. -Use of an Elemental Stone: a smaller number of Pokémon evolve when they're exposed to an Elemental Stone. HAPPINESS ===================================================================== A Pokémon's happiness influences many aspects of the game, such as the evolution of certain Pokémon (Golbat, Chansey, Eevee, Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi), the power of Return and Frustration, and the TM you get in Goldenrod City on Sundays. Happiness can assume a value between 0 a 255. There's a girl in Goldenrod City who can tell you how happy your leading Pokémon is; according to what she says, you can estimate the happiness of your Pokémon. BREEDING ===================================================================== Breeding is probably the most useful new feature in the Gold and Silver versions. It allows you to get a level 5 lowest-evolution Pokémon, and it is the only way to get certain Pokémon (Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby). It also allows you to make a Pokémon learn attacks it would never learn naturally nor via TM/HM. Breeding is by far the best way to complete your Pokédex as it allows you to get any Pokémon from its evolved forms - for instance, you can get a Charmander from a Charmeleon or a Charizard, something you couldn't do in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions. This is also good as it gives you a chance to get as many Eevee as you want to evolve them in all possible ways. So if you want to fill your Pokédex, or you want to give your Pokémon some formidable movesets for link or Stadium battle, you should definitely spend some time studying the mechanisms behind breeding. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ First of all, take with you two Pokémon that can breed (see below to know which Pokémon are compatible to which) and bring them to the Daycare on Route 34. How long will the two Pokémon take to breed? Well, the time required for them to lay an egg is based on two factors. If Pokémon are: consider number: -same species 254 -different species 128 If Pokémon have: detract from previous number: -same ID 77 -different ID 0 If the two Pokémon's Defense or Special DVs are the same, or their Special DVs have a difference of 8, consider number 255. Such Pokémon will not breed. The number you get determines the compatibility of the two Pokémon, which you can estimate if you check either Pokémon in the Daycare backyard: Number Message 255 "It's brimming with energy" 254 "It appears to care for..." 177/128 "It's friendly with..." 51 "It shows interest in..." 0 "It has no interest in..." Now, if the number isn't 0 or 255 (that is, if the two Pokémon are compatible), a random number up to 255 is calculated, and it is decreased by 1 for every step you take. When it drops to zero, another random number between 0 and 255 is calculated; if this number is greater than the number you calculated earlier, the two Pokémon will not lay an egg, and the whole process starts anew. If the second number is lower than the one you calculated earlier, an egg is produced. Get it from the old man in the backyard. The baby in the egg is the lowest evolution of its mother, unless a male Pokémon bred with Ditto - in that case, the baby is the lowest evolution of its father. Knowing the baby's species, you can determine how many steps you have to take with the egg in your team before it hatches. The second move source is the list of moves the Pokémon can learn from level up - if BOTH parents know a move the baby would learn from level up, the baby will be born with that move. The third source is the list of moves the Pokémon can ONLY learn through breeding. If the FATHER knows one of these moves, the baby will be born with that move. The fourth and last move source are TMs and HMs. If the FATHER knows any moves the baby can learn via TM or HM, the baby will be born with those moves. Of course, a Pokémon moveset is limited to four moves. Moves other than those the baby naturally has at level 5 are added to its moveset in the order thay are in the father's moveset. If the moves the baby should be born with are more than four, the first move in the list is deleted. Let's make an example: Father: Pikachu Moves: Thundershock Thunder Thunderbolt Thunder Wave Baby: Mareep Moves: Growl Mother: Ampharos Thunder Moves: Thunder Punch Thunderbolt Tackle Thunder Wave Thunder Wave Cotton Spore Both parents know Thunder Wave, which Mareep can learn from level up, so the baby is born with Thunder Wave. Mareep can learn Thunder via TM, and the father knows Thunder, so the baby is born with it. Furthermore, Mareep can only learn Thunderbolt through breeding, and since its fathre knows it, it is passed to the baby. However, a level 5 Mareep is naturally born with Tackle and Growl, so its moveset has two empty spaces, but since the moves received from the parents are three, Tackle, being on top of the list, is deleted. NOTE: Smeargle can copy and keep forever the attacks of its enemies, so it can be very useful to have a male Smeargle to copy attacks from other Pokémon and to pass down moves to baby Pokémon. This would allow you not to modify your Pokémon's movesets just to give a baby certain attacks. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Here's a list of the moves Pokémon can ONLY learn through breeding. First of all, some general rules: -If the baby is female, its stats come from the father. -If the baby is male, its stats come from the mother. -If one of the parents is Ditto, the baby's stats come from him. -A female's Defense has the same DV as the father's. -A male's Defense has the same DV as the mother's. -You CAN'T breed two Pokémon whose Defense and Special DVs are the same, or whose Special DVs have a difference of 8. As you know, stats' DVs are 4 (HP is calculated in a different way): Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special (Special Attack and Special Defense have the same DV, so they're calculated as one). They are expressed by hexadecimal numbers (from 0 to F, F being equal to 15). When it comes to determine the baby's DVs, two random hexadecimal numbers are calculated - let's call them X and Y. Here's an example of how a baby's DVs are determined: Baby: female Father's DVs: F5F8 X = 13 Y = A4 Attack DV = left digit of X Defense DV = Defense DV of parent of opposite gender Speed DV = left digit of Y Special DV = Special DV of parent of opposite gender, OR Special DV of parent +8 if parent's Special DV is 0-7 -8 if parent's Special DV is 8-F So, the baby's DVs are: Attack = 1 Defense = 5 Speed = A (10) Special = B (11) or 3 (B-8) That is, 15AB o 15A3. Now you may be wondering where does the HP DV come from. It is calculated according to the first four. To calculate it, turn each DV into a binary four-digit number, as follows: 0 = 0000 1 = 0001 2 = 0010 3 = 0011 4 = 0100 5 = 0101 6 = 0110 7 = 0111 8 = 1000 9 = 1001 A = 1010 B = 1011 C = 1100 D = 1101 E = 1110 F = 1111 Now, take the last digit of each number and their sequence will be equal to the baby's HP DV.
